Concord News

A number of people from this community went to the all day singing at Fairview Baptist Church Sunday.

Joe Abbott and daughter, Sherril of Memphis, Tenn. spent the week here with his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Yeager, and other relatives.

Leon Abbott and family and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Yeager of Birmingham visited relatives here Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt Pinkard visited Mr. and Mrs. Grady Dumas in Decatur Saturday.

Mrs. Mamie Butler and Tonie of Cullman spent Wednesday here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Pike.

T. O. Waldrop is home from the hospital. He is improving nicely.

Mrs. Jean Dollar visited Mrs. Dora Pike Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Butler and Tonie spent Sunday afternoon in Birmingham with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Butler.

Mr. and Mrs. William Pruden of Birmingham spent last Monday night here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Pike.

Mrs. Rubie Evans spent Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Lela Boyd and Dora Pike.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Butler visited the W. H. Pikes Sunday.

Mrs. W. T. Casey is slowly improving. She is in the Caraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham after a car wreck two weeks ago. Both legs are broken and she has other serious injury.

Born at 5:05 A. M. today, April 18th at University Hospital was Finis St. John, IV, son of Mr. and Mrs. Finis St. John, III.

In Montgomery Monday to participate in a National Education Committee study on the methods of teaching in the upper primary grades were four representatives from the city schools, Robert Stewart, Felix Murrell, Mrs. V. L. Vines and Miss Marie South.

Southern Bell has begun the laying of underground conduit and cable down High School Road, down First Avenue East and will go to Sutterer Heights and other outlying areas getting ready for the installation of dial phones in Cullman.

In Birmingham Saturday attending the National Security Forum, sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary, were Mrs. Euell Bain, Mrs. W. V. Phillips and Mrs. Irene Imbusch.

One of the twelve finalists in the competition for the four Gorgas scholarships to be granted in Alabama this year is Stephen A. Scharfenberg of St. Bernard High School. The final selection will be made at interviews at Jacksonville State Teachers College on April 25th.

“Don’t forget your post card vote for Frances Kirk for queen of the Alabama Wheel Chair Convention on April 28th,” says Mrs. Marjorie Brown. The cards must be mailed, this week, to 2200 4th Ave. No. Birmingham, Ala. According to reports from the headquarters Miss Kirk is now one of the three top contenders for the title. “It might be your vote that elects her”, says Mrs. Brown.

At campus elections at Blue Mountain College, Miss, last week Sally Vandiver was elected Stewardship Chairman for the Baptist Student Union Council for 1957-58. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Vandiver of Cullman.

The Rev. Mr. J. S. R. Tippens will attend the Southeastern Regional Training Camp for Church Camp Leaders in Camp Monroe, Laurinburg, N. C. April 23rd through April 27th. The camp is sponsored by the Special Committee on Camps and Conferences of the National Council of Churches. Mr. Tippens is to direct North Alabama Presbytery’s Pioneer Camp during the week of June 17 – 22, at Cook Springs near Pell City.

A call by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church here to the Rev. Edward Jankens has been accepted by him, according to a wire received by that congregation on Monday. He was formerly pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church at Hanceville and recently has been pastor of a church in Flint, Michigan. He will arrive soon to take up his duties here.

The Firemen’s Annual Ball will be held at the National Guard Armory on Thursday, April 25th from 9 till —. It is informal. Millard Buchmann’s Orchestra will furnish the music.

Transportation will be furnished free to all handicapped persons who wish to attend the Alabama Wheelchair Society Convention in Birmingham on April 28th. Mrs. Marjorie Brown, Phone 9185, should be contacted for reservations. Everyone wishing to go should be at the VFW Home at 9 A. M. April 28th. Food at the convention will be served by the VFW Auxiliary.

Off to Sylacauga Tuesday were a couple of car loads of women, most of them members of Helen Marie’s Sewing Circle classes. They toured Avondale Mills and watched the processing of cotton into cloth and also visited the Cotton Boll. Going were Mesdames Bert McGriff, V. P. Hughes, Carl S. Arnold, J. C. Bates, Otto Buettner, E. R. Arnold, Arlin Day, Erica Whittaker, Gertis Stevens, Ezma Whittaker, V. C. Lambert and Miss Helen Marie Dahlke.

The most exciting experience the three little daughters of M/Sgt and Mrs. John Williams have had in all their life is going into a store and trying on “shinny shoes”, they, Patricia, Barbara and Sandra have been with their parents in Japan for the last three years. There, all shoes had to be ordered from  the States. Since arriving to visit their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Sandlin of Hanceville, the little girls have found shopping for Easter shoes most delightful.

Drinkard Has Fish Supper

Drinkard Chevrolet Company served a fish supper on April 10 to celebrate the showing of the new Chevrolet trucks. A film was shown and trucks and cars were on display.

Fairview Has Womanless Wedding

A Womanless Wedding is being presented by the Fairview P.T.A. Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 P. M.

A cleverly written farce, the wedding features Fairview men, both teachers and parents. Proceeds for this play will be used to improve the school cafeteria.

The cast includes bride, Van Moore; groom Joe Shults; Uriekah Scratchfeed (the jilted one), Felston Mullins; Needza Mann, Milford Black; Mr. Oats (father of bride), Bryce Tidmore; Mrs. Oats, Wallace Yarbrough; Uncle, Carter Pierson; Aunt, Pete Bailey; Grandpa, Hershal Butler; Grandma, Hubert Phillips; Preacher, Den White; Mrs. Nosey, Herbert Handley; Ushers, Luke Worthy, Luther Tucker; Mr. Turnip Green, Roy Ambrester; Aunt Hominy Grits, Wendell Abbott and Sis Estes Oats, Ray Brown.

40 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. George Stiefelmeyer have named their baby son, George, Jr.

The baby of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Nelson of Rt. 8, Cullman swallowed a 4-penny nail on Tuesday.

Charles S. Duffey, the “Beech Grove Acrobat”, pulled off another kite stunt Tuesday night by letting up a kite with a lighted kerosene ball attachment to the tail. J. W. Burns thought it was another visit of Halley’s comet. Allen Sargent foresaw a German war.

Miss Emma H. Zeun and Emil Wm. Fabery were married on Tuesday. Bridesmaids were Misses Alma Fricke and Anna Fabery and best man and groomsman were Emil Zeun and Herman Buettner.

Miss Julia Neville of Trinity, who has often been the guest of Mrs. R. D. S. Robertson, will be married on April 18th to C. C. Arbuckle of West Virginia.

L. A. Kelton attended court in Huntsville this week.

Miss Bertha Collier of Boaz is the guest of her cousin, Miss Johnnie Collier at Simcoe.

Leaving today to join the army were Thurman Oaks, Luke Hill, Earl Johnston and John McConnell.

Daniel Eyer, 84, died in Birmingham Tuesday and funeral services were held at St. John’s Church Wednesday.

Mrs. Sam Green and Miss Dora Gray spent Tuesday in Birmingham.

Dr. J. C. Martin is attending the state medical meeting in Montgomery this week.

Miss Lillian Clark and Pete Geisen were married Tuesday at 9 A. M. at Sacred Heart Church. Miss Caroline Geisen and John Meyer were the only attendants.

Mrs. Bert Coe was hostess to Symphony Club members this week when Rolla Gray presented the program.

Mrs. G. S. Kidd will leave Friday for a month in Tampa, Fla.

Mrs. I. E. Daly chaperoned six Camp Fire girls to the Wahuah-taysee council meeting in Birmingham. Those going on the trip were Ruth Robertson, Ruth Fuller, Mary Verde Roden, Vertie Kirk, Ismay Kinney and Alene Fuller.

Officers elected for the coming year by the Cullman County Singing Convention last weekend are W. Oliver Cooper, president; Dixie Harris, vice president; Edgar Calvert, secretary-treasurer.

The Woodard Store was broken into Wednesday night. M. H. Woodard, manager, stated that cash and merchandise were missing.

Miss Claussen, member of the Cullman High Faculty, has been awarded a scholarship for a year’s study at the University of Berne, Switzerland.

Five men were injured in an automobile accident near Eight Mile bridge on Saturday. They are O. S. Graham, Tom Brisco, Vernon Brisco, E. A. Tanner and Alton Gay.

The Cullman High Beta Club, one of 32 of these honorary clubs, in Alabama includes on its roll Melba Ruth Jones, Kathryn Keyes, Editha Carlisle, Jewel West, Gladys Glover, Agnes Spinks, Onis Green, Charles Walker, Alton Lott, Ruth Knight, Mary Grace Orr, Lillie Mae Lynch, J. C. Yeager, W. L. Nearen, Jr., Gordon Daves, Louise Stiefelmeyer, Marguerite Culpepper, Irene Abbott, Atholeene Lee, Lorenzo Reeves, George Gammon and John Allen Barnett.

45 men are employed to maintain Cullman County’s 3600 miles of roads.

Mr. and Mrs. Emil Buettner spent Sunday in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. and Mrs. V. P. Hughes have moved into the Al Richter apartments.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Vick have purchased the Dwight Fuller residence in East Cullman and moved Thursday.

Returning from Mobile where they attended the state dental meeting are Dr. W. J. Cottingham, Dr. G. W. Bledsoe, Dr. and Mrs. N. V. Culpepper, Dr. and Mrs. Leroy Bledsoe, Misses Clara Latta, Madeline Wooten and Mrs. Herman Lee.

Mrs. T. D. McMinn is seriously ill in a Birmingham hospital.

Mrs. Homer Mitchell was hostess to Coterie Friday afternoon.

Married this week were Miss Annie Bailey Jones and Allen D. Hyatt.

Pentecost News

An Easter weekend revival will be held at the Pentecost Church with Rev. Henry Deyr of Bloomington, Ind. as the evangelist.

Home from the hospital and recuperating nicely is Mrs. Juanita Moore.

Bill R. Weathers, who is stationed at Barksdale A.F.B., La., spent last week at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Weathers.

Rayborn Miller is ill with flu.

Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Cornett of Decatur have a new baby daughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Willie Mullins were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lee Buckelew.

Mrs. Lois Watson of Nesmith attended church here Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark Allbritten, Mr. and Mrs. Junior Knop and Sandra were Sunday afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Bryant.

Hulaco Activities

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carter are entertaining with an Easter Supper at their home next Saturday night. Everyone in the Hulaco community is invited to come.

The Revival is in progress at Ryan Baptist Church each evening at 7:00 all week.

S. T. Pierce and T. P. Wright drove to Huntsville last Monday for medical treatment.

The Pat Wrights honored their newest daughter-in-law, Elaine, Mrs. Theo Wright of Birmingham, with a surprise birthday supper on Saturday night. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Grace, Don and Susan, Mr. and Mrs. James Wright, Danny and Barry, Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Wright, Sharon and Gregory, Mr. and Mrs. John Wright, M. B. Albright, H. H. Wright and Theo Pat Wright.

Jimmy Albright carried his mother, Mrs. Audrey Albright, and his aunt, Mrs. Gennelle Wright to Clay County to visit relatives last weekend.

Two of Mrs. Wylie Albright’s brothers and their families, the Hoods, spent the weekend with her family here.
