CULLMAN, Ala. – Relay For Life of Cullman County is inviting residents to “go gold” Thursday, Sept. 10, when every dollar raised through Relay For Life nationwide will be restricted to childhood cancer research, advocacy and patient support programs.
Gold Together Day is part of the American Cancer Society’s Gold Together initiative and coincides with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign is intended to show children fighting cancer and their families that communities across the country are standing alongside them.
Registered Relay For Life participants can also earn special incentives through the one-day fundraising challenge. For every $50 raised Sept. 10, a participant will receive one entry for a chance to win one of 98 prize packages containing an exclusive Gold Together Day travel blanket and Relay For Life tote bag. Participants may earn up to 10 entries.
The 10 highest-fundraising participants nationwide will receive a full-size Gold Together Day blanket and Relay For Life tote bag. Relay Rewards points will also be doubled for up to 500 points earned during the challenge.
The Gold Together movement was created by childhood brain cancer survivor Cole Eicher, who envisioned a designated childhood cancer team at every Relay For Life event. The American Cancer Society said the initiative has raised approximately $11 million since 2019.
Gold Together has previously had a direct presence in Cullman County. Tribune reporting in 2020 documented Wallace State Community College’s participation as the county’s Gold Together team after childhood cancer affected the family of a Wallace State faculty member. The team raised money specifically for childhood cancer research, education, prevention efforts and patient support.
Relay For Life has been held in Cullman County since 1994. By the local program’s 30th anniversary in 2023, Cullman County participants had contributed more than $1 million to the American Cancer Society’s broader fight against cancer.
The annual local Relay celebrates survivors, remembers those lost to cancer and supports research and patient programs. Cullman County’s 2026 Relay was held May 30 at Depot Park and included the traditional Survivors Lap and Luminaria Service.
Registration is now open for Relay For Life of Cullman County’s 2027 campaign. Participants who want to join a team, create a team or begin raising money ahead of Gold Together Day can register at www.relayforlife.org/cullmanal.
