W. Tom Vandiver spent Monday in Birmingham.

The Honorable George Parker spent Wednesday at Brilliant.

A dance was enjoyed at the Growlers Club rooms on Friday night.

Mrs. A. Dreher will entertain at the Symphony Club on November 23rd.

Claud Griffin spent the first of this week in Memphis.

Miss Emma Ehrensberger spent the weekend in Birmingham.

Doctor P.M. Allison has returned home from Battle Creek, Michigan.

In the election of November 7, 1916, in Cullman County these were elected: Probate Judge – Fred J. Buchmann (R), Circuit Clerk – O.S. Roden (D), Tax Collector – Lee Cochran (R), County Commissioners – L.A. Kelton, E.T. Knight, J.B. White and J.A.Vickery (all Democrats).

Joe C. Sapp spent Monday in Birmingham.

Coroner, J. Grady Moss has a sprained ankle.

Professor and Mrs. Joe Ray, of Hanceville, were in Cullman on Saturday. Mrs.  Conrad Howard and Miss Trichel Cordes spent Tuesday in Birmingham.

Doctor and Mrs. C.E. Herrin and Doctor and Mrs. Alurie Culpepper will spend this week in Baltimore, Maryland at the Southern Medical Convention.

The Women’s Missionary Society of Good Hope Baptist Church met at the church for the November meeting. Mrs. Essie  Henry was  elected  president, Mrs. B.H. Reid vice-president, Mrs. Stella Weeks secretary, Mrs. Bessie (John) Christian personal service and Mrs. D.E. Ryan P.T.A.

From the Files of 1950

Mr. J.E. Gray, Senior, who was employed by the Tribune in 1888, stopped by for a visit last week. John A. Johnson was editor when Mr. Gray  started work for the Tribune. He now resides in Birmingham.

Cullman cheerleaders this year are Carolyn Miller, Shirley Fay Hamilton, Nancy Moore, Dale Tidwell and Bill Handley.

Mr. Dennis Blalock, of Route One, Hanceville  brought  by the  Tribune some lovely sweet potato blooms, resembling the morning glory with a dark purple center. Mr. Blalock has three acres of the blooming potato vines and says these are the first blooms he has ever seen in many years of farming.

Pat Buttram, son of  Reverend and Mrs. J.W. Buttram, of Baileyton, was seriously injured last week in California when a prop cannon exploded and hit him in the chest. Mr. Buttram is making six movie pictures a year with Gene Autry and also has a television program. Pat is a brother of Reverend Gus Buttram, pastor of the Fairview Methodist Church.

Clyde Jerome Speegle is the new son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Speegle. He was born on September 18th.

Mrs. Opal Wheeler has received word that her husband, Sergeant Wheeler was seriously injured in Korea, on September 15th.

R.L. Baker, of Baileyton, has some fine Yates apples. Ad.

A 1949 Oldsmobile driven by Roy Richter, of Cullman and a truck driven by Oscar Cordes, collided close to the post office on Sunday afternoon. There was about $100 in damage to the Richter car and about $25 to the Cordes truck.

C.J. Burkart suffered a stroke of paralysis, on his right side as he sat at the breakfast table on Monday morning. He has worked at Kinney Brothers Store in West Cullman for 25 years.

Philip G. Hartung has been elected president of the State Board of Pharmacy. He owns Peoples Drug Company.

A.C.E. Grafton, of Route Four, Cullman, has peanuts, he grew measuring 7 ½ inches around, the oblong way. The seed came from Florida. He feeds the “gobblers” to his hogs.

 

Those yelling for the Bearcats on Friday night included: Helen Hamilton and Kenneth Speegle, Doris Lessman and Kermit Robinson, Gwen Hart and Elwin Robinson, Jeanette and Bobby Joe Blalock. The game was at Scottsboro.

Dwight McSwain leaves the Bearcat football team to enter the Army on October 19th.

Cullman defeated Scottsboro, 14 to 6. Coach Tilrow Morrison attributed the upset to the blocking of Asa Blalock, Dahlke and Cook.
