CULLMAN – We continue our series, asking leaders throughout the county about the highs and lows of 2016, and expectations for this new year.

Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail

1.  What is the best thing you will remember about 2016?

"The election.  I got re-elected with an overwhelming percentage. That's a true blessing, and humbling.  We also have several new council members, and I'm excited about that."

2.  Is there anything you would like to forget about 2016?

"One thing jumps out at me: all the shootings around the nation. I'm all for the 2nd Amendment, but this is so sad; I just don't know what's going on."

3.  What is the first thing or most important thing you anticipate seeing in 2017?

"I just get excited on Sundays about everything we're going to accomplish in every week.  We're working on sidewalk projects, connecting Wallace State to downtown Hanceville; and other things just to make the city better for our citizens."

Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long

1.  What is the best thing you will remember about 2016?

"Well, the biggest thing I'll remember would be the 111-pound marijuana bust."

2.  Is there anything you would like to forget about 2016?

"I won't forget it, but if there was something, it would be all the senseless heroin-induced deaths we encountered.  I can't even tell you how many there have been in Cullman County, but we had approximately a half dozen in Hanceville.  I won't be able to forget it."

3.  What is the first thing or most important thing you anticipate seeing in 2017?

"I'd like to see our department continue to grow and advance in the services we provide to citizens and the training we provide to our personnel."
