PREP SOFTBALL: Big 1st innings propels West Point past Holly Pond 16-3; Thursday scoring recap

West Point 16 – Holly Pond 3

West Point’s offense exploded in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff single by Macayla Wilkins, Brinlee Phillips lined a two-run home run over the left field fence to give them a 2-0 lead. They quickly loaded the bases with one out, then an error allowed Macie Brown, Kylee Quinn, and Kara Jones to score to make it 5-0. Liberty Shadix drove in a run on a ground ball, and Wilkins added an RBI triple to push their lead to 7-0. Later that inning, another error allowed Wilkins and Phillips to cross the plate as that made it 9-0.

Holly Pond cut it to 9-1 in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Alivia Farr, but the Lady Warriors countered in their half. Jones stole home, Ella Minck drove in a run on a ground ball, and Phillips added an RBI single to give them a 12-1 lead. Maggie Nail scored on a West Point error in the third to make it 12-2, but a sacrifice fly by Katie Beth Yovino in the Lady Warriors’ half increased their lead to 13-2. Phillips scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth, Quinn collected an RBI single, and Sidney Burks drew a bases-loaded walk to push the West Point lead to 16-2. Nail’s RBI groundout in the fifth made it 16-3, but the deficit was too much for the Lady Broncos to overcome, as the Lady Warriors ended up defeating Holly Pond 16-3.

Burks finished with four RBIs for West Point (13-16-1). Phillips added a pair of hits and three RBIs. Quinn (three hits), Wilkins (two hits), Yovino (one hit), and Minck (one hit) each collected an RBI in the win. Emma Grandstaff went 4 2/3 innings, allowing just five hits and three runs (one earned), walking two, and striking out three. For Holly Pond, Nail and Farr each collected a hit and an RBI in the loss.

Good Hope 11 – Cold Springs 1

After a scoreless first inning, Cold Springs got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Kaydance Williams’ RBI single brought home Adriana Young as that gave the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead. Good Hope countered in their half. Haley Lay and Addyson Burgess each hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, then Lay and Brooklyn Lambert (pinch runner) both scored on an error to give the Lady Raiders a 2-1 lead. Natalie Miller followed that up with an RBI double to make it 3-1. Later that inning, Lizzy Steed drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt to give them a 4-1 lead. Campbell Koch drove in Kylee Smith on an RBI double to stretch their lead to 5-1.

Good Hope added to their lead in the third. Miller hit an RBI single to right field to make it 7-1. With two outs, Steed hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to give the Lady Raiders a 9-1 lead. Good Hope stretched their lead to 11-1 in the fourth on an RBI double by Lay and a sacrifice fly by Molly Johnson. Molly Benefield collected the final three outs of the game in the fifth inning to help seal the 11-1 win for the Lady Raiders.

Miller (two hit), Steed (home run), and Johnson each drove in three runs for Good Hope (17-8-1). Lay (three hits) and Koch (one hit) each added an RBI in the win. Burgess gave up just three hits and one earned run in her four innings of work, walked one and struck out one. Benefield gave up a hit and struck out three in her inning of work. For Cold Springs (6-12), Williams finished with a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss.

Curry 12 – Cullman 4

Curry got out to a quick lead against Cullman, as they scored the first nine runs of the game to take a 9-0 lead. The Lady Bearcats got a two-out RBI single from Reese Hopper in the bottom of the third to make it 9-1, but the Lady Yellow Jackets quickly pushed their lead to 11-1 in the top of the fifth. Abby Maples scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to cut it to 11-2. Curry made it 12-2 in the seventh on a solo home run. Cullman cut it to 12-4 on an error and an RBI double by Hopper in their half, but they didn’t get any closer after that, as they ended up falling to the Lady Yellow Jackets, 12-4.

Hopper finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for Cullman in the loss.

Fairview 16 – Brindlee Mountain 3

For the second time in as many meetings, Fairview got out to a big lead against Brindlee Mountain, as they ended up sending 13 batters to the plate. RBI singles by Ayda Payne and Allison Phillips gave them a 2-0 lead. They were far from being done, though, as Payne stole home to make it 3-0. Allison Davis added an RBI single, Ralie Gaines drove in a run on a ground ball, Ada Fales hit an RBI single, Kylie Kovar drove in a pair of runs on a single, and Payne finished off the inning with a two-run home run to give them a 10-0 lead.

The Lady Aggies made it 13-0 in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single off the bat of Emily Benson. Phillips lined a two-run home run over the center field fence to give Fairview a 15-0 lead in the top of the third. The Lady Lions cut it to 15-2 in their half, but Davis hit a solo home run in the fifth to make it 16-2. The Lady Aggies would go on to roll past Brindlee Mountain 16-3.

All but two Fairview (15-8) players drove in at least one run in the game. Payne and Phillips each finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Benson (two hits), Davis (two hits), and Kovar (one hit) each drove in a pair of runs. Fales (one hit), Gaines, and Simmons each collected an RBI in the win.
