PREP SOFTBALL: Good Hope pulls away to top Holly Pond 8-6; Tuesday scoring recap

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope hosted a varsity matchup with their county rivals from Holly Pond Tuesday night and the Lady Raiders fended off a late push from the Broncos to secure an 8-6 win. Holly Pond plated four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5, but Good Hope scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull away with the win. Kylee Smith tossed a complete game for the Lady Raiders, allowing zero earned runs, six hits and striking out five batters to earn the win.

Smith worked around a two-out error to get out of the top of the first unscathed. Lizzy Steed hit a leadoff double in the Lady Raiders’ half and moved to third on a passed ball. Smith helped out her own cause by hitting a sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead. Natalie Miller scored on a fielder’s choice in the second to make it 2-0.

Good Hope got a two-out rally started in the third. Back-to-back singles by Carley Adams and Molly Benefield put runners on the corners, then an RBI single off the bat of Haley Lay pushed their lead to 3-0. Molly Neal led off the top of the fourth with a double and later scored on a passed ball to cut the Holly Pond deficit to two at 3-1. Good Hope countered in their half. A double by Steed brought home Maggie O’Neil to give them a 4-1 lead. Smith drove in a run on a ground ball to make it 5-1.

Holly Pond got a two-out rally started of their own in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back errors allowed Maggie Nail to cross the plate to cut it to 5-2. Ellie Burks added an RBI double to make it 5-3, then Neal scored on a passed ball, and Burks scored on an error on the next pitch to tie the game up at five. The Lady Raiders answered right back in their half.

They loaded the bases with nobody out, and on the first pitch, O’Neil hit a two-run double to give them a 7-5 lead. Two pitches later, Brooklyn Lambert scored on a double play to make it 8-5. Alivia Farr drove in a run on a ground ball in the top of the seventh to trim it to just two at 8-6, but Smith collected the final out on a ground ball to help seal the two-run win for Good Hope.

Steed (two hits), O’Neil (two hits) and Smith (one hit) each drove in two runs for Good Hope (16-8-1), while Lay added a hit and an RBI in the win.

For Holly Pond, Burks finished with three hits and an RBI and Farr collected an RBI in the loss.

The Lady Raiders will host Cold Springs Thursday and the Lady Broncos will travel to West Point.

Meek 5 – Cold Springs 2

Kortnie Williams led off the game for Cold Springs with a single. She later came around to score on an RBI single by Adriana Young to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead. It remained a one-run game until the fourth inning, as an RBI double by Meek in their half tied the game up at one. Cold Springs broke the tie in the top of the fifth. Ciara Calvert drove in Brooklyn Ingram on a ground ball to give them a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice bunt by the Lady Tigers in their half tied it up at two. Meek broke the tie in the sixth, as an RBI single, a sacrifice fly, and a passed ball gave them a 5-2 lead. Cold Springs couldn’t get a rally started in the seventh and ended up dropping their game to Meek 5-2.

Young (two hits) and Calvert (one hit) each drove in a run for Cold Springs in the loss.

Cullman 11 – Jasper 9

An RBI single off the bat of Kynlei Storey gave Cullman an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Jasper countered with four runs in their half to grab a 4-1 lead. The Lady Bearcats got the lead right back in the top of the third. A walk and a single had runners on the corners with two outs. Hattie Graham lined a two-run double to left field to cut it to 4-3, then Brooklyn Morton launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to give them a 5-4 lead. The Lady Vikings, though, put up four runs in the fourth to get the lead right back at 8-5.

Cullman played long-ball in the fifth, as a two-run shot by Reese Hopper made it an 8-7 game. The Lady Bearcats tied the game up at eight in the sixth on an RBI single by Taylor Au, but a solo home run by Jasper in their half gave them a 9-8 lead. Cullman got a rally started in the top of the seventh, as Graham got hit by the pitch, and Morton reached on an error to lead off the inning. On the first pitch, Dracen Bates delivered the biggest hit of the game for the Lady Bearcats, as her three-run home run over the left field fence gave them an 11-9 lead. Storey retired the Lady Vikings in order on just seven pitches to help seal the 11-9 win for Cullman.

Bates finished with the three-run home run for the Lady Bearcats. Graham (one hit), Morton (two-run home run), and Hopper (two-run home run) each drove in two runs. Au added three hits and an RBI, while Storey collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the win.

Fairview 12 – Brindlee Mountain 0

Fairview didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard on Senior Night against Brindlee Mountain. Emily Benson led off the bottom of the first with a double. Three straight doubles by Kylie Kovar, Ayda Payne, and Addison Phillips gave the Lady Aggies a 3-0 lead. Allison Davis continued the onslaught with a two-run home run to make it 5-0. Later that inning, Isabella Lopez and Benson each added RBI singles to make it 7-0.

Fairview continued to add onto their lead in the second. An RBI double by Ava Pruett and a two-run single by Kallie Trussell gave them a 10-0 lead. Fairview made it 12-0 in the third on a bases-loaded walk and an error. Payne finished off the Lady Lions in order in the fifth, and the Lady Aggies celebrated Senior Night with a 12-0 win over Brindlee Mountain.

Davis finished with two hits and three RBIs for Fairview (14-8). Trussell added a hit and two RBIs. Benson, Kovar, Payne, Phillips, and Lopez all collected a pair of hits and an RBI, while Pruett posted a hit and an RBI of her own in the win. Payne pitched a four-hit shutout, as she walked two and struck out three.

Falkville 13 – Vinemont 1

Falkville jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in their opening at-bats, but Vinemont cut it to 3-1 in their half on an RBI single by Maci Smith. It was all Lady Blue Devils after that, though, as they scored the final 10 runs of the game and ended up collecting a 13-1 win over the Lady Eagles.

Smith finished with a hit and an RBI for Vinemont in the loss.

Priceville 20 – West Point 5

Priceville’s bats were red-hot in their opening at-bats against West Point. They put up 12 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 12-0 lead. After being shut out for the first three innings, West Point’s bats got going in the fourth. Kylee Quinn hit a leadoff single and later came around to score on an error to put them on the scoreboard. The Lady Warriors loaded the bases with one out. Sidney Burks lined the first pitch she saw into right field for a two-run double to cut it to 12-3. Macayla Wilkins added an RBI single, and Brinlee Phillips collected a sacrifice fly to make it 12-5. The Lady Bulldogs ended things in their half, as they put up eight runs and ended up getting the 20-5 win over West Point.

Burks finished with a hit and two RBIs for West Point. Wilkins and Phillips each collected an RBI in the loss.
