CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY — Dike Lee Moss celebrated his first birth anniversary on April 24. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Moss of Rt. 1, Cullman and his grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Moss of Rt. 1, Cullman and Mrs. Cora Turner of Cullman.
Hanceville Happenings
Mr. and Mrs. Grady Wiggins and Miss Dorothy Wiggins have been the recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wiggins, Jr. and children in Mobile. Mr. Wiggins and Dorothy have returned home but Miss Wiggins is spending several weeks with the children while the Grady Wiggins, Jr. are making a business and pleasure trip in Texas and Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Johnson had as their Sunday guests Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hall of Hollypond and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Johnson of Birmingham.
Dr. and Mrs. George T. Rowe attended a horse show in Millbrook Saturday and spent the night with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pusey in Montgomery. Mrs. Pusey returned home with them for a visit.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Clapp and Mrs. Wallace Green spent Sunday in Birmingham where they met with, who had spent the week end at the University of Alabama with Elaine.
Mrs. Thelma Gray of Birmingham spent the past week with her sister, Mrs. Earl Edwards.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Terry, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Enzy Mickle spent the past week end in Nashville.
Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Young moved to Florida last week where they will make their home. Mrs. Sallie Ballard has been quite ill at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Helms of Birmingham spent Sunday visiting relatives here.
Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Williams attended memorial services Sunday at Good Hope Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Kyle of Decatur spent the week end visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kyle and Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Pitts.
Guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Carden were Mrs. Edward Vaughn and children of Athens, Miss. Mrs. W. H. T. Vest and children of Cullman and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Duren and Jamie of Ashville.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Singleton of Gardendale were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Maxfield.
Mrs. Marie Sandusky of Tuscaloosa is with Mrs. John Sims, who remains ill at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Newman of Birmingham were the Friday guests of relatives.
Mrs. Kate Chew and Mrs. James Ballentine and daughters of Birmingham were the guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Long and attended the memorial at Mulberry.
Mr. and Mrs. James Templeton and children of Birmingham were guests Sunday of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thornton.

Mrs. Lou Vincent spent the week end visiting Mr. and Mrs. Powell Hall and family in Vinemont.
Mr. and Mrs. Geshes Hines spent the past Sunday visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Reid in Birmingham.
Mrs. E. M. Quick and Miss Lola Mae Knight spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Quick in Decatur.
Guests over the week end of Mrs. Nora Hopper were Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stella and family of Gardendale; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Powell of Jones Chapel and Miss Susie Williams and son of Battle Ground.
Hanceville Lion’s Club held their regular quarterly Ladies’ Night on April 30. After the evening meal the Rev. John Perkins presented the program. Guests at the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jackson, Mayor and Mrs. Carton Ballard, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Boatright, Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Harris. Members who were present included Mr. and Mrs. Jim D. Meady, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Vansant, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Flowington, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hogan, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fowler, Russell Branyon, Rev. Roger Anderson, Billy Rau, Grady Wiggins and Miss Dorothy Wiggins.
The Trinity Kindergarten will hold its annual graduation exercises on May 11 at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Max Chamblee will be in charge, assisted by Vicar James Nelesen. Mrs. Chamblee has completed her fourth year with Trinity Kindergarten and plans are being discussed for a possible fifth year beginning in September.
The Hanceville High School has chosen football cheerleaders for the coming year. Chosen by a vote of the student body are Karen Crumbley, Nancy Bland, Glenda Betha, Lutha Gay, Patty Ann Grantham, Joyce Taylor, Carolyn Rushing and Sara Lee Spears. Alternates are Brenda Washington and Judy Chambley. The advisor to the cheerleaders is Miss Mary Chappel, physical education teacher for the Hanceville High school girls.
The last meeting of the Hanceville PTA will be held tonight at 7:30 o’clock. Officers for the 1962-63 period will be installed and the Hanceville Glee Club will sing.

40 YEARS AGO
Two people in Cullman County were killed by lightning on Saturday afternoon. Miss Myra E. Wood, 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. I. Wood of Holly Pond was struck by lightning in a field near her home at 3 p.m. and killed instantly. Julius Bassett, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bassett of Rt. 2, Hanceville, was struck and killed while picking strawberries.
Cullman High School elections are over with the following results: Boys’ Council—Springton Long, president; Max Well, vice president; Conrad Copeland, secretary and treasurer; Frank Baird, judge; Edgar Ehrensperger, lawyer; Ed Bradford, football manager; George Burkart, assistant manager; Harvey Camp, baseball manager.
Dr. J. C. Martin and Dr. R. B. Dodson have moved into their handsome new offices in the upstairs of the new brick City Bakery Building on First Avenue East.
Applications for loans from the National Farm Loan Association may be made at either of the three branch offices in this county from managers Emil Alldrich, Cullman; Scott Hyatt, Crane Hill or W. J. Humphreys of Joppa.
Misses Amelia Hammack and Boyd Oldacre will go to Auburn next week for API commencement exercises.
Gilbert Partrick was home from Florence Normal for the week end.
The Rev. Henry Meyer is recovering from surgery, which he underwent in a Birmingham hospital last week.
Dr. S. O. Kimbrough is attending the general conference of the Methodist Church in Hot Springs, Ark.
Edna Lee Motley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Motley, has won first prize in a Birmingham Post comic contest.
The body of James T. Bailey arrived home Sunday from France. He was killed in battle Sept. 14, 1918.
20 YEARS AGO
Miss Mary Ruth Graham of Logan, a student at Alabama College, has been chosen as one of 19 American students to participate in an Institute of World Affairs at Salisbury, Mass., this summer. Students from Latin America, Canada and Europe will join those from the U.S.A. Miss Graham is the only one from the deep South.
A flag-raising ceremony at Meek High School will be held Saturday at 2:30 in honor of Russell Burdick Wade, the first U.S. Naval casualty of World War II. The Cullman American Legion Post, with Wm. R. Griffin as commander, is sponsoring the event. A motorcade will travel to Winston County for the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carter celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this week.
The Coterie sponsored a musical open on Sunday at 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church in observance of Music Week. Those participating on the program were Prof. Pat Bria, Jack Nesmith, Spencer Speegle, Mrs. J. W. Arnold, Mrs. John King, Miss Miriam Edwards, Mrs. F. B. Libon, Sr., Miss Charlotte Gibbs, Miss Martha Kate Nash and the Cullman High Glee Club. Ushers were Winfield Lovett, Jr., Douglass Fuller, Bill Griffin, Jr., and Paul Mehl.
In Auburn Sunday as guests of Dr. and Mrs. Carl Rehling were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rehling, Mrs. J. A. Lessley, Miss Mary Rehling, Herman Hankey, Walter Rehling of Ft. Benning, Ga., met them there for the day.
The Cullman Eastern Star chapter honored Mrs. J. A. Denhan, a Grand Officer of Alabama, last week when many Grand and Past Grand Officers were in attendance.
Sgt. Frederick H. Wolff of New Orleans and Cpl. Luther L. Wolff of Camp Pickett, Scala, are spending leave here with their father, F. O. Wolff, this week.
Marcus Davis of Cullman has been named sports editor for “The Alabamian,” bi-monthly newspaper of Alabama College.
