CULLMAN, Ala. – The Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County (FPLCC) on April 10, hosted a thrilling night of mystery, plot twists and laughter with a murder mystery dinner.
Gathered at Camp Meadowbrook, patrons were served a fancy meal while given the task of deciphering clues to solve a “murder.” Interactive character actors greeted visitors at the door, immediately immersing them in the story. During the game, some guests were selected to play colorful murder suspects like Miss Peach or Colonel Mustard, while others had to leave their seats to investigate the room and find clues to a possible murder suspect, with the guilty party being one of the name-tagged suspects. Murder suspects were interviewed by guests, who had to use critical thinking and skills of deduction to determine the identity of the murderer.
FPLCC Member Ezekiel McBrayer said he loved seeing the engagement among the actors and guests. For McBrayer, the standout moment was, “seeing people not with the company get into it. I think that was a really cool thing to see. I think it’s something that you can come and get out of it what you put in. If you want to come and have a good time, I think it’s a great way to do it.”
Although the evening was all fun and games, there was a mission behind the event. All proceeds go directly to the library’s Capital Campaign, an initiative designed to fund future improvements and assist the library in any way needed to continue serving the Cullman community. The total amount raised was not available at press time.
Cullman County Public Library System Director Amber Thornton said there will be more murder mystery dinners in the future. Thornton encouraged the community to get involved with their local library branch. “We’ve done so much in one year at the library to bring new energy and a welcoming environment,” she said. “I would encourage everybody to decide how they can partner with us, whether small or large, over the next couple of years. I can’t wait to see what we do next.”
