CULLMAN, Ala. – The Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee (SLEPC) is hosting two cleanups this month. The Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake Cleanup will be held Friday, April 25, from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and the Adopt-a-Stream Roadside Cleanup will take place Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
SLEPC Treasurer Margaret Hill said the Renew our Rivers lake cleanup will be held twice a year, in spring and fall.
“The Renew Our Rivers cleanup on Friday is in conjunction with Alabama Power (APC) and Renew Our Rivers (ROR),” Hill said. “We will ride on the APC ROR boats and clean up the shorelines along sections of Simpson Creek and Ryan Creek and their tributaries.”
She said Adopt-a-Stream is a roadside cleanup, and will involve picking up trash along the roads leading from County Road 222 to Smith Lake Park.
“Our goal is to have at least 16 volunteers,” Hill said. “What I love most about the event is seeing the massive piles of trash at the end of the day and knowing that without our efforts, it would have ended up in the lake. It fills me with pride to play a small part in preserving the beauty and health of the lake.”
Lunch will be provided, and volunteers will receive a T-shirt as a token of appreciation.
“One important thing to note is that volunteers must register so we have an accurate count to plan for lunch and ensure we have enough supplies,” Hill said. “Our flyers have a QR code that will take you to the registration page, and you can find the link to register on our website, SLEPC.org.”
Volunteers for the Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake Cleanup on Friday, April 25, should meet at the Smith Lake Park boat launch.
Volunteers for the Adopt-a-Stream Roadside Cleanup on Saturday, April 26, should meet at Ryan’s Creek RV Resort – County Road 813 off County Road 222, just across the bridge headed to Smith Lake Park.
Volunteers for both events should register beforehand at www.SLEPC.org, where additional information is available.
