CULLMAN, Ala. – With Labor Day coming up this weekend, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and the Cullman Police Department want to make sure residents have fun and stay safe during the celebrations.

Cullman Police Chief David Nassetta stated, “The biggest thing for this Labor Day is still going to be more of a concern with the heat.”

Nassetta said his officers will be doing normal patrols; however, this year they have more officers on the patrols because the department has more people. “I’m not going to say that we’re changing anything drastically as our patrol ways go, but we will have extra people who are now assigned to those shifts and we’ll represent new positions in the department,” Nassetta stated.

“We do also have a dedicated park police person. Now, we have an officer that is dedicated solely to the parks, so he’ll be busy. He works at the WildWater Park and then he also does patrol different times at the various parks like Palomino and he makes his way up to Hurricane Creek Park. He will cover as much ground as he possibly can,” Nassetta said.

CCSO Director of Communications, Lt. Chad Whaley shared the following tips for going out on the water:

  • Be safety conscious. Situational awareness should not stop on the land. Be aware of potential dangers in the boat and on the water.
  • Don’t drink and drive, whether in the car or on the boat. On land or water, alcohol and operating motor vehicles is a deadly combination.
  • Always wear a life vest. Regardless of one’s swimming ability, a life jacket should be worn anytime they are on the water. Life jackets save lives!
  • Be extra cautious with kids. Along with life vests, constant monitoring is a must for children. Make sure there is no miscommunication as to who is watching the kids. Eyes (and hands) should be on the little ones at all times.
  • Avoid unnecessary distractions. Distracted driving, distracted boating or distracted parenting can all be disastrous.
  • Be diligent and do your part to ensure the safety of everyone on the water.

“From the sheriff’s office and myself, we want everyone to have a blessed Labor Day weekend and to be safe,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “We look forward to all the families that are coming in and enjoying this weekend, but most importantly be safe and God bless everybody.”
