CULLMAN, Ala. – A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking along U.S. Highway 31 South between Hanceville and Garden City Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2023.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick identified the victim as Daniel Leon Johnson, 48, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Kilpatrick said Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Mr. Johnson was walking northbound and was struck by a car traveling northbound,” said Kilpatrick.
The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 31 near Jochum Road, a stretch between Hanceville and Garden City.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) provided further details on the accident. Senior Trooper
Brandon Bailey stated that the fatal event took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. Johnson was hit by a
2008 Ford Explorer driven by Julie M. Phillips, 24, of Hanceville.
Officials reported that the driver did stop after the collision, and the circumstances surrounding the
crash are still under investigation by Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.
