CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Fair is officially underway following opening ceremonies Thursday evening. After the national anthem, the flag was raised before members of the Cullman County Commission, Cullman County Fair Association (CCFA) and Cullman Lions Club cut the ribbon, signaling the start of the 68th annual fair and welcoming the growing line of guests waiting to enter the fairgrounds.

Months of planning and work go into pulling off the yearly community event. CCFA President Charlie Childers said, “We take November and December off, and we start back in January.”

He said more than 100 Lions Club members volunteer to prepare for and work during the fair each year.

The Cullman County Fair Queen Pageant will take place Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Coca-Cola Theater. Other pageants will take place on different nights. Guests will not be able to livestream pageants this year.

Said Childers, “We are now part of the Miss America organization and they do not allow livestreaming of any pageant. A lot of it comes back to these young ladies all pay really large amounts of money for their talents and choreography and other people may steal them and use them.”

Of other attractions guests can enjoy this year, Childers said, “This is the first time ever we’ve got a petting zoo.” Two farms, Snead’s Farmhouse and Fortner Farms, will bring their animals for kids to enjoy. Snead’s Farmhouse will be at the fair through Oct. 10, and Fortner Farms will be set up Oct. 11-15.

FFCLA, 4-H and FFA Exhibits can be viewed in Building 1 through the 15th. Students set up their exhibits with projects highlighting knowledge they’ve gained through their clubs.

Proceeds from the fair support Alabama Lions Sight, which provides free vision care in schools and towns to indigent residents of Alabama and to many local nonprofit agencies helping those in need in Cullman County.

Admission for ages 10 and older is $7, plus the cost of rides. Children younger than 10 will be admitted for free, but rides will not be free. Unlimited ride passes, not including admission, will be available at the gate for $25 Monday-Thursday and $30 Friday-Sunday.
