Rudene and I had good plans for a weekend of rest and relaxation. We were going to go to Auburn on Thursday and wait for one child, some of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come down. We had planned to let all of them go to the game, and we were going to stay at the condo and relax while the game was on.
It seems like there is an old saying something like this, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Well, our plans really went awry. On Halloween morning our plans changed.
I awoke about four o’clock Thursday morning and slid my feet off the side of the bed with plans to go to the bathroom. I don’t know exactly what happened. Maybe my foot slipped, or my blood pressure dropped. Whatever happened, I sat down on my right hip with a really good pop. This woke Rudene and she came running around the bed to see what happened.
I said to her in a calm voice, “I think I have broken my hip.”
I still needed to go to the bathroom, so she helped me up and I walked to the bathroom and back to the corner of the bed closest to the bathroom. By this time I could not go any further. As the old saying goes, “That really, really smarted.”
As I sat on the bed, I told Rudene that we needed to call an ambulance. I told her to tell them that I didn’t want any sirens or flashing red lights. Just come and get me.
We made it through the operation and the hospital stay. Late Monday afternoon we made it to the Hanceville Nursing Home.
I awoke Tuesday morning and the nurses thought I needed a bath. They made preparations for my bath. I felt like the King of Siam. There I was buck naked on the bed and four good looking nurses surrounding me. One was washing me, and one was drying me off. Another one had a safety razor and shaved my face. This was the only time a woman ever shaved me except in vital places for an operation. The last nurse must have been the supervisor for she didn’t have any tools to work with. I told them that I had never had an audience like that for my bath. But hopefully that will only come once in a lifetime.
Thank you nurses and all others who are doing such a fine job to get me well.
