COLONY – On Thursday morning, Colony’s town government moved a big step closer to fulfilling one of its longtime promises to its community with the installation of a tornado shelter behind Colony Town Hall. Site preparation and pad construction began last week, and a crew from Survive-A-Storm Shelters of Thomasville, Georgia was going to install the shelter this Friday, but the threat of rain brought them over a day early to make sure their part of the project was done on time.

The shelter includes two restrooms and a generator to supply electricity when utilities are down.  Mayor Donnis Leeth reported to The Tribune that separate crews still have to come to hook up the generator and septic tank before the shelter officially goes into operation.

Leeth also said talks are continuing with Dollar General about locating a store in the town and that a tentative site on Alabama Highway 91 is being considered.  The town also recently opened a Carpenter’s Cabinet food pantry in its Educational Complex.

“We’re just trying to move forward,” said Leeth, “and do stuff we need a little bit at a time.  And the storm shelter will save some lives . . . Plus, the food pantry, that’s going to help a lot of people, too, in the surrounding area to be able to get food.  We don’t want to leave no one hungry. And Colony’s just trying to do the best we can do for people in the area, just help people out.”
