From the Files of 1904:

Of interest to her many friends in Cullman was the wedding, on February 17th, of Miss Louise Marie Young and B.F. Rumble, which was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Allen, in Decatur.

Mrs. Lizzie Simpson, of Hartselle, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. W.H. Day, this week.

Miss Lily Wallenhaupt, age 19, daughter of George F. Wallenhaupt, died on February 12th, after twelve hours of agony, from burns. While she was dusting the mantelpiece, her clothing caught on fire. She was alone and ran to the back porch, to try to extinguish the flames in a rain barrel.

Joe Pope, formerly of Vinemont, a section hand, was run down and killed by a train near Mineral Springs yesterday.

All who have not paid their city license by March 1st, 1904, will have warrants served on them. Adv.

Professor P.M. Matthews has announced his candidacy for Superintendent of Education, for Cullman County.

A quiet home wedding on February 16th united Miss Jessie Campbell and George Bauer. Reverend J.T. Miller, of the M.E. Church, solemnized the wedding at the home of Mrs. F.H. Campbell.

The school at Pleasant Hill has been closed, because of measles.

W.H. and A.P. Harris killed 13 rabbits last Saturday.

The candidacy of Robert I. Burke, for Probate Judge, is meeting with much favor from all parts of the county.

Mrs. G.W. McClanahan, who has been ill for a year, died and was buried at Mount Zion, on Wednesday.

 

From the Files of 1934:

Cullman County schools reopened on February 12th, after federal relief funds had been granted.

Judge Leon McCord, candidate for governor, spoke in Cullman, on Tuesday.

E.C. Kinney’s mule barn burned on Saturday afternoon. The building was a complete loss, as were three mules and 50 tons of hay. Eleven mules were rescued from the barn.

Married on February 17th were Valen I. Wood and Miss Maggie A. Brown.

On their honeymoon in Biloxi, Mississippi are: Mr. and Mrs. Chester Goodwin. Before their marriage here on February 15th, Mrs. Goodwin was Miss Esther Adams. They will reside in Bessemer.

Mrs. Dillard Kinney was hostess to Entre Amies, in February, at her home.

Mrs. P.G. Hartung will visit her daughter, Margaret, at Montevallo, this weekend and attend college night.

Clifton Skipper and Bernard Holmes spent Sunday evening in Birmingham.

Miss Margaret Deppe entertained at a dinner party, on Tuesday, in celebration of her birthday.

Miss Lettie Thompson and Leonard Byrd were married, on Saturday.

Miss Gladys Daniel and Mrs. Thelma Lawrence were co-hostesses to members of the First Baptist Y.W.A., on Monday night.

Myrl Cornelius, student nurse at South Highland Hospital, spent the weekend with her parents, Doctor and Mrs. L.B. Cornelius, of West Point.

Several people, at West Point, were bitten by a dog suffering with rabies. Those bitten were Charley Reynolds, Clyde Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. M. Robinson and daughter and the son of Melburn Whittle. They are all taking treatments.

Since 1990, Nashville, Tennessee has been added as the 41st metropolitan area of a million or more population, These 41 areas contain 54 percent of the United States population. Fastest growing of these largest metro areas were: Orlando, Florida (6.5 percent) and Houston and Atlanta (both 6.2 percent).

 

Athens Honors List

The Athens College Honors List includes: Ms. Jaina W. Anderson, of Cullman, Ms. Tanya Amanda Ashley, of Cullman, Ms. Judy B. Bright, of Baileyton, Mrs. Kathy Lea Harkness, of Garden City and Ms. Vickie Leann Lamar, of Cullman.

 

Green Resigns At Vinemont

Head basketball Coach, Mike Green has resigned his coaching assignment at Vinemont, but will remain on the faculty, as a teacher. Green has not had outstanding talent in the last four years, but according to most observers was an outstanding coach. On behalf of the kids, whose lives you have touched Mike, thanks for a job well done.

 

Red Cross Assists Lauderdale County

Members of the Cullman County Chapter of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to assist the Lauderdale County Chapter, as a result of the recent ice storm. Team members Greg Nail, Dale Gregory, Linda Wade and Beverly Denson left on Friday afternoon and returned on Sunday.
