Betty Jean Wood, 91, of Cullman, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Woodland Village Nursing and Rehab on April 15, 2026, with her family by her side.

Betty Jean was born August 25, 1934, in Maxton, North Carolina, to the late Luther Thomas “Red” and Lena Walters English. The youngest of 3 siblings, she was raised in Maxton, NC where she graduated from Maxton High School. She lettered as a varsity cheerleader and was crowned Miss Maxton. Once graduated she attended Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, NC where she received a degree in business shortly thereafter. On December 13, 1953, she married Rex Johnny Wood Jr and together they raised four children. In addition to being a wonderful mother and homemaker for many years she earned her real estate agent license in Rock Hill, South Carolina and worked many years as the Bookkeeper/Administrative Assistant for Willoughby Roofing and Construction until she retired in Cullman, Alabama.

She loved reading and was a fan of Nicholas Sparks, doing word search puzzles, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and Great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved by all who knew her. She and my father loved their trips to the beach whether it was the Eastern shores of the Carolinas or the Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama.

Betty is predeceased by her husband of 72 years Rex who passed January 30, 2025, (who lovingly called her “Bug”), her sister Elizabeth Warwick of Lumberton, NC, a brother Luther Thomas English Jr of Maxton, NC, and a granddaughter Sarah Kristen Wood of Cullman, Alabama. She is survived by her four children Rex Johnny Wood III (Deborah), Luther Thomas Wood (Linda), Deborah Lynn Cummings, and Cheryl Ann Fellague-Chebra (Kamel), grandchildren Ashley Wood Edwards (Andrew), Christopher Thomas Wood, Steven Cody Cummings (Lisa), James Carson Cummings (Katherine). Great- grandchildren Trenton Wood, Ethan Edwards, Cooper Wood, Kopis Cummings, Kal Cummings and Ryan Cummings. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Marguerite Wilson of Winston Salem North Carolina and several nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

Following a private service April 19, 2026, with family in attendance she will be interred with her husband Rex at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home Mausoleum. We wish to thank Enhabit Hospice and Woodland Village for the wonderful care of our mother in her final days. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Enhabit Hospice.
