CULLMAN, Ala. – The North Alabama Agriplex and East Elementary School joined to host the Summer Garden Club at the East Elementary Garden. The first meeting was held on June 17. Meetings will be held every Tuesday until July 29.
After planting pumpkins last year, this year students planted zinnias and okra and pulled onions and potatoes. They also tended to strawberries and installed an umbrella to read under.
The children also learned ways of tending to the garden. They mixed fertilizer into the soil to feed the plants and watered them.
The Summer Garden Club teaches children about caring for a garden and the outdoors. The East Elementary Outdoor Classroom has a butterfly garden, habitat for pollinators, home for frogs and toads, log decomposition station, compost station, garden dedicated to George Washington Carver and a vegetable garden.
A new Aquascapes natural pond was donated by ProWorx in honor of school volunteer JeanMarie Yearwood and will be installed in the fall.
Summer Garden Club meetings are held on Tuesdays from 8-9 a.m. in the garden behind East Elementary School. Parents and guardians must stay with their children.
