CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission, at its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 17, acknowledged two retiring employees from the road department. Randy Baker was honored for his 20 years of service, and Timothy Tipton for his 32 years of service. Commissioners spoke of Baker’s and Tipton’s reputations for excellence in roadwork and their dedication to the community, thanking them for their years of service.

The commission approved multiple resolutions regarding speed limits throughout the county, including new limits on County Roads 744, 1282, 96 and 97, prompted mainly by recent paving work and efforts to enhance road safety.

Several funding-related items were addressed throughout the meeting. Commissioners approved a resolution to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) aimed at reconstruction and resurfacing several county roads, including 627 628 630 and parts of 702. They authorized the Youth Advocate Program to apply for funding from the Juvenile Probation Office of the Alabama Department of Youth Services for Blount and Jackson counties, authorized Hartt to apply for funding from the Juvenile Probation Office of the Alabama Department of Youth Services for Cullman County and authorized the Transition Program to apply for funding from the Juvenile Probation Office of the Alabama Department of Youth Services for Lauderdale County.

The commission also approved a new partnership with Wallace State Community College, which will provide County employees with access to discounted tuition and expanded training opportunities at no cost to the County. In another community investment, the commission discussed the allocation of $20,000 toward a military drone to be put on display in Veterans Park at Sportsman Lake, with those funds to be offset by the Cullman County Tourism Bureau. This funding has not yet been approved.

Planning and zoning matters were attended to with the approval of preliminary plats for new subdivisions, along with several bond extensions for ongoing developments.

Additional approvals included a tree removal project at Veterans Park at Sportsman Lake (with a note to comply with wildlife regulations), sanitation billing agreements, payments for law enforcement medical services and scheduling adjustments to accommodate upcoming elections.

The next Cullman County Commission work session is scheduled for Thursday, July 17, at 4 p.m., with the full commission meeting to follow at 6. Both will be held in the commission meeting room.
