PREP BASEBALL: West Point downs Danville 7-2; Friday scoring recap

WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point returned home Friday night to host a varsity matchup against Danville and the Warriors collected a 7-2 win over the Hawks.

Danville loaded the bases to start out the game, and they ended up scoring on a passed ball to give them a 1-0 lead. West Point got that run back in their half. Titan Thornton reached on a one-out error. Later that inning, Jay Lamar hit the first pitch he saw into center field for an RBI single to tie the game up at one. Neither team was able to break the tie for the next inning and a half, but the Warriors broke the tie in the bottom of the third. They reached on three straight errors to lead off the inning, and Skylar Echols scored on a passed ball to give them a 2-1 lead. Charlie Ashley added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

The Warriors added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Boston Freeman hit a one-out double to center field, then with two outs, Ashley lined an RBI triple to center field to put West Point ahead 4-1. Lamar followed that up with his second RBI single of the day, as that extended their lead to 5-1. The Hawks cut it to 5-2 on an RBI double in the top of the sixth, but the Warriors responded right back in their half. A single and a walk put runners on first and second with two outs, and Hunter Graves and Carter McAfee both scored on an error to give West Point a 7-2 lead. Danville put a pair of runners on in the top of the seventh, but Josh Cherry collected the final two outs of the game to help seal the 7-2 win for the Warriors.

Lamar (two hits) and Ashley (one hit) each drove in a pair of runs for West Point. Freeman added a pair of hits, and Graves collected a hit of his own in the win. Cherry went the distance for the Warriors, as he gave up six hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out seven.

Addison 10 – Winston County 6 (Softball)

Winston County struck first in its opening at-bats. A two-out error gave them the early lead, but Addison would respond in their half. A walk and a single put runners on the corners to lead off the inning, and Lainey Evans’ RBI single tied the game up at one. Mackenzie Carter scored on an error two pitches later to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. A single loaded the bases with nobody out. Later that inning, back-to-back RBI singles by Summer Evans and Katie Barrett extended their lead to 4-1.

Addison made it 5-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Lainey Evans. Winston County hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to cut it to 5-3 and a pair of RBI singles in the top of the fifth tied the game up at five. The Lady Bulldogs looked to break the tie in their half. Wood hit a leadoff single, and one out later, Barrett drew a walk. Savannah Miller drew one of her own with two outs to load the bases, then back-to-back errors allowed Wood, Elina James, and Miller to score to give them an 8-5 lead. Powell punched an RBI double to center field to make it 9-5, and Lainey Evans scored on a wild pitch to stretch their lead to 10-5.

Winston County made it 10-6 on an RBI single in the top of the seventh and later loaded the bases with two outs. Atkins got the next batter to fly out on the first pitch to end the game and help persevere the four-run win for Addison.

Lainey Evans finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs. Powell collected three hits and an RBI, while Summer Evans and Barrett each added a hit and an RBI.

Cold Springs 10 – Carbon Hill 0 (Baseball)

Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard to start out the game. After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second, Cold Springs looked to get some early run support for Boston Archer in their half. Archer drew a one-out walk, and an error allowed him to move up to second. Elijah Cole hit an RBI single to right field to give the Eagles the early lead. Later that inning, Mason Gable scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Cooper Johnson led off the bottom of the third with a single and later scored on an error to put Cold Springs ahead 3-0. The Eagles broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth. They put a pair of runners on to lead off the inning, then with one out, Lindan Hill scored on an error to make it 4-0. Brandon Chasteen hit an RBI single to right field to stretch their lead to 5-0, and after a hit by pitch, Ayden Black crushed a two-run triple to left field to put them ahead 7-0.

Cold Springs ended things in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Williams and Hill hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Williams scored on an error on the first pitch to make it 8-0, and Hill scored on a passed ball to extend their lead to 9-0. Three pitches later, Gable ended the game, as his RBI single helped seal the 10-0 win for the Eagles.

Black led the way for Cold Springs with a hit and two RBIs, while Cole (two hits), Gable (one hit), and Chasteen (one hit) all drove in a run in the win. Four Eagle pitchers combined to pitch six shutout innings, as they gave up just two hits, walked two and struck out four.
