CULLMAN, Ala. — The city of Cullman is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for its “most spectacular Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony to date,” according to Nathan Anderson, executive director of Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism.

Last weekend’s opening event for the Christkindlmarkt drew nearly 13,000 attendees on opening day, culminating in a total of about 25,000 visitors from across 24 states.

“After an incredible opening day of nearly 13,000 people, we finished the weekend with an estimated 25,000 from 24 states all across the country,” Anderson said, reflecting the growing popularity of Cullman’s Christmas festivities.

This year’s parade promises to be a grand affair with over 80 entries, a testament to its evolution into a cherished tradition. “This year’s Christmas parade is set to be the most spectacular yet,” Anderson said.

The parade, a nighttime event, has become a focal point of the season, bringing together people from all parts of the region.

In response to the increased attendance, the parade will be rerouted to Second Avenue to accommodate more spectators and participants. “To accommodate our growing attendance, we’ve rerouted the parade to Second Avenue, ensuring more space for everyone,” Anderson explained. The change aims to improve safety and enjoyment for all attendees.

The parade will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, at Second Avenue Southeast and Fifth Street Southeast, and will travel north along Second Avenue, turn left on Second Street Northeast and continue north along First Avenue Northeast to Depot Park.

Despite the region’s unpredictable weather, Anderson assured that the event’s organizers are well-prepared for any weather-related contingencies. “We adhere to standard outdoor festival guidelines for weather-related issues, including wind and lightning,” he said, adding that current forecasts only show a minor chance of light rain.

The parade culminates at Depot Park, where a tree lighting ceremony and a Christmas concert are set to take place. Building on last year’s success, this year’s event will feature a second tree lighting show at 9 p.m., hosted by ABC 33/40’s James Spann with a performance by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks.

“We’re elevating the experience this year with a second tree lighting show!” Anderson smiled.

In a show of inclusivity, he said, the parade and the tree lighting ceremony are free, ensuring everyone in the community can participate in the festivities.

He also advised attendees to come prepared for the weather. “While we’re anticipating clear skies, it never hurts to have a raincoat or poncho in case of light rain,” he said.

Anderson expressed his gratitude to the event’s sponsors, City leadership and various City departments for their contributions.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone involved in making this year’s event possible,” he said. “We eagerly await the chance to celebrate with our community and wish everyone a wonderful Christmas season!”
