CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library hosted a Community Plant Swap on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Local Pre-K teacher Danielle Holder put the event idea together.
“We had 25 in attendance and it was a great turnout,” Holder said. “The highlight of the swap was a gentleman bringing in Ginkgo tree seedlings. This tree has been on my wishlist for a while and I was so excited when he brought them in! This is why I love the plant swap. Not only does it bring people with the same interests together, but I have made friends and left with some wishlist plants.”
She said the theme was “bring a plant — take a plant.”
“People bring anything related to plants. Planters, outdoor plants, indoor plants, herbs and trees. Someone brought a propagation station last time,” said Holder.
She said the first time they had this event was in February 2026, and she has put it together every three months since. “Hopefully, the next one is going to be Nov. 21. It hasn’t been finalized, but I think it will be a great time. It’s right before the major holidays and it will bring everybody together before the major holidays.”
She continued, “The idea came after I took up gardening as a hobby. I enjoy being outside and houseplants. I wanted more plants, but didn’t have the budget for it. I thought that other people may feel the same so I created a flyer.”
She said she didn’t know where to host the event and then the library came to mind.
“Since this would be a free community event, I figured the library wouldn’t mind, and so far things have been great,” Holder said. “I enjoy these events because it brings people together that share the same interests. It is like a book or craft club, but for plant people.”
