Shirley Williams Fowler, 77, passed away Dec. 8, 2020. She was born Oct. 23, 1943 to Lincoln and Mary Young Williams.

Shirley was the youngest of four daughters and grew up mostly at Valley Grove. Her family was in Missouri when she started first grade. When The Williams moved back to Alabama, she attended Good Hope School.

The lovely young lady met the love of her life, Daniel Fowler, from Hanceville. They were married Dec. 14, 1959. They lived in Huntsville briefly then returned to Cullman County. Their daughter Evon was born in November of 1961.

The Reverend Delwin Kilgo lost his wife, and Daniel ran the store with Delwin and Shirley took excellent care of his daughters.

Daniel and Shirley joined the Baptist church and soon, Shirley was singing with a quartet. Her favorite solo selection was “Amazing Grace.” Later, her daughter became an accomplished pianist and often accompanied her mother.

The Fowlers were very active church members and contributed their time and resources. Shirley taught Sunday school for various age groups for five decades.

They eventually bought land and a house on Stouts Mountain. It was improved over the years. They took care of Daniel’s parents in their later years and helped with her parents as well.

Shirley retired after 27 years as an x-ray technician and mammogram technician. For several years Shirley wrote a popular column for The Cullman Tribune. She loved to cook. She was very creative and made beautiful crafts and handmade quilts. Her yard was a real show place with all kinds of pretty flowers.

The Fowlers loved to travel and visited most of the states and Mexico and Canada, often with other couples.

Shirley took pride in looking neat and many of her clothes were very striking.

For a number of years Shirley was a poll worker. Most recently she was an active member and a contributor at the Hanceville Senior Citizen Center, where her daughter is manager.

Mrs. Fowler is survived by her husband of 61 years, Daniel Fowler; daughter Evon Fowler; sister-in-law Ellen McDonald; brother-in-law Paul Angell; several nieces and nephews; numerous friends; and a favorite dog.

The Fowlers were active in the Auburn Alumni Association.

Conducting the services at Hanceville Funeral Home will be the Reverend Delwin Kilgo and Reverend Trueman Davis. Interment will be at Fairview West Cemetery.

Mrs. Fowler is preceded in death by her parents Mary and Lincoln Williams and three sisters Louise Bailey, Betty Angell, and Wanda Sams.

During her terminal illness, several people assisted including her husband, her daughter, and a niece, Paula Sams.

The family wishes to thank everyone who assisted in any way. A grand lady is rejoicing for eternity and left a wonderful legacy.
