Funny Things from Yesterday: It’s better than me think it would be

I am using two stories this week since they are short and both pertain to my youngest brother, Jim.

Our Uncle Robert, as far back as I can remember, had always been a good cook.

Jim was still a little fellow when he first sampled Uncle Robert’s cooking. He was at Uncle Robert and Aunt I.V.’s house one day and Uncle Robert had baked a nice cake. He offered Jim a slice of it. Jim, not being used to a man cooking, was a little skeptical of it at first, but he decided he would try it. After he tasted the cake, he said in his child English, “It’s better than me think it would be.” After a few minutes, when he had almost finished eating this slice of cake and hinting for more, Jim exclaimed, “That’s the last bite of that good cake.”

The goggle box got him

A year or so after the cake incident, Mother and Daddy took us children to Panama City, Florida for a vacation. Uncle Robert and Aunt I.V. had their vacation at the same time, and we all went together.

We stayed at a motel right on the beach, so this made it real convenient to swim any time we wanted to.

I’m sure you have all seen the swim fins and the swim goggles that you can buy at the beach. Best I remember, the swim goggles came in a small green box. So, I called it a goggles box.

Jim, still being quiet young, did not venture too far out into the water. He mostly waded and let the waves wash over his feet. As most children do, he was thinking about monsters in the ocean, such as sharks and giant octopus that could carry you off. All of a sudden, Jim screamed and ran out of the water up on the beach,

Uncle Robert was nearby and asked Jim what had him. Little Jim, with fear in his eyes, had discovered what got him and replied to Uncle Robert, “A goggle box got me.”

Uncle Robert had a good laugh out of this and liked to tell this story to others.
