CULLMAN – Preliminary reports from the physicians who treated 12-month-old James Lee Sanson at Children's of Alabama indicate that his injuries could not have been caused accidentally, or more specifically, there is no way that he could have done anything to himself that would have caused the injuries that resulted in his death.

On May 29, 12-month-old James Lee Sanson of Cullman was taken to Cullman Regional Medical Center by private vehicle.  The child was in cardiac arrest when he arrived at the hospital and was soon transferred to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham. Sanson remained at Children’s until the time of his death on the afternoon of May 31.

According to a statement from the Cullman Police Department, the attending physicians could find no preexisting conditions that would have caused James’ death. An autopsy was performed on Friday, June 3, although the final autopsy report will not be completed for several months.

At the time that the injury likely occurred, James was in the care of two people who were not his parents.  At the time James was taken to the hospital, they gave an account of what happened.  As information developed and the extent of James’ injuries was realized, the account given by the caregivers was missing any explanation of how James was injured.

When the two caregivers were contacted by the Cullman Police Department for a follow up interview, they refused and directed any further contact to their attorney, Tommy Drake.  Drake has denied Cullman Police Department’s request to speak to his clients.

"We will continue to diligently investigate this case to bring justice for James," said CPD Cpt. Becky Boyd.

Anyone who has information in this case is asked to contact Sgt. David Nassetta at the Cullman Police Department at 256-775-7170.
