CULLMAN, Ala. – John Gottfried Cullmann was born on July 2, 1823, and died on Dec. 3, 1895, at 72. The Cullman County Museum, houses in a replica of his home, offered free admission July 2 in honor of his birthday.

Room 4 features Cullmann’s office. The Cullman County Museum writes, “The furnishings, books and maps reflect the work of planning a growing community during the late nineteenth century. Panels featured in the room explore the importance of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, whose arrival encouraged settlement, commerce and industry while connecting Cullman to communities across the south.”

A late-1800s typewriter – an Oliver Typewriter – is displayed in the room, as well as several German-language volumes as a nod to Cullmann’s German heritage.

His heritage is also reflected in Room 5, along with aspects of his music and home life. There are parlor instruments that families use before radio and television. An interactive listening station allows visitors to listen to German hymns and more, such as fiddle music.

Room 6 offers a glimpse into Cullmann’s life as the public is able to look upon family pieces connected to him. The items and furnishings are all from his original home.

The museum states these pieces “reflect domestic comfort, family memory and 19th century craftsmanship.”

His bedspread and parlor settee are featured, in addition to portraits of the Cullmann family.

Museum Director Molly Bloom said free admission was a fun way to bring the Cullman community to the museum, but also a way to celebrate Cullman’s founder on his birthday.

The museum recently created a tribute display honoring the historic Stiefelmeyer Building, which was tragically lost to fire earlier this year. Stiefelmeyer hats and boxes remain intact for visitors.

Bloom stated she browsed the museum’s inventory when she came across boxes labeled “Stiefelmeyer” after the fire. “It was like Christmas morning and I found all of these amazing hats!” she said.

The museum aims to have pieces of the building’s remains showcased in the future with details of its history.

The museum recently hosted an interactive workshop, and Bloom said they hope to hold more events in future, with plans for holiday-themed tours.
