CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman High School Theatre will stage “Scrooge the Musical” Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15, and Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 17-18, in the school auditorium.
“We did this same musical, ‘Scrooge,’ seven years ago and had a huge success with it,” Director Wayne Cook said. “We liked it so much we decided to bring it back and do it again. It’s a retelling of the classic by Charles Dickens, ‘A Christmas Carol.’ We like to do projects that our community can enjoy. ‘Scrooge’ is a wonderful family-oriented production. It’s a classic that people enjoy year after year.”
Cook shared that one thing about the version they’re doing is that it’s a musical, and a really good one at that.
“People seem to love musicals,” he said. “I will say the music is probably one of my favorite parts of this production. Our students do a very good job acting and singing. People will not be disappointed, but instead will experience a quality theatrical production that will put them in the Christmas spirit.”
Cook said the students’ success shines bright through the creation of the show — building and painting the sets and helping with overall technical aspects— and their actual success, recently winning several state level awards.
“They have been involved in the costuming and marketing of this production,” he said. “Our students at Cullman High School who are a part of the theater program are award-winning. They won Best in Show on a state level last year and also won the Alabama Thespian chapter. They were honored to represent the state of Alabama at the International Thespian Festival this past summer. Cullman Theatre was just awarded a Best in Show for a one act play performed at a district festival. These students are well known for their quality work. We hope the community will come out and see ‘Scrooge.’ It’s a great way to support the arts and get into the Christmas spirit.”
