
BREMEN, Ala. – Cold Springs controlled possession throughout the first quarter, but Gordo scored on its first two drives and pulled away in the second half to defeat the Eagles 35-13 in Class 2A, Region 5 play Friday night.
The loss was Cold Springs’ first of the season, dropping the Eagles to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the region.
Cold Springs received the opening kickoff and began at its own 3-yard line. Cooper Johnson gained 11 yards on his first three carries, including a first-down run, and Ethan Day helped move the Eagles downfield with a pair of 14-yard runs.
Day completed an 8-yard pass to Brandon Chasteen on third-and-8, and Johnson added another third-down conversion with a 4-yard run. The Eagles maintained possession through the end of a scoreless first quarter, keeping Gordo’s offense off the field.
Cold Springs advanced to the Gordo 5-yard line early in the second quarter, but an incomplete fourth-down pass ended the drive.
The Green Wave picked up a first down after a Cold Springs offside penalty, then scored on an 83-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead with 7:53 remaining in the half.
After forcing a three-and-out, Gordo overcame a bad snap that cost it 9 yards. A 20-yard completion extended the possession, and a 41-yard touchdown run two plays later pushed the lead to 14-0 with just over three minutes remaining.
Cason Alexander gained 9 yards for a first down on Cold Springs’ next possession, and Day added another first-down run. The Eagles could not score before halftime and trailed 14-0 at the break.
Gordo received the second-half kickoff and extended its lead on the opening possession. A 26-yard completion and a 15-yard run set up a 2-yard touchdown run, making it 21-0.
Cold Springs responded with its first scoring drive. Alexander gained 3 yards before Day broke loose for a 24-yard run. Day left the game after that play and did not return.
Two penalties pushed the Eagles back, but Chasteen completed a 29-yard pass to Eli Voce to keep the possession moving. A pass interference penalty against Gordo later moved the ball to the 9-yard line, and Johnson scored on a 2-yard run to cut the deficit to 21-7 with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter.
Gordo answered 13 seconds later with a 58-yard touchdown run, extending its lead to 28-7.
Jordan Garmon picked up a first down with a 5-yard run on the Eagles’ next drive. Following a penalty, Chasteen completed a 7-yard pass to Voce before Gordo intercepted his next attempt.
The Green Wave used a 29-yard completion and two runs to reach the Cold Springs 12-yard line. Three plays later, a 2-yard touchdown run increased the margin to 35-7.
Johnson and Chasteen helped move the Eagles downfield on their final scoring possession. A face mask penalty against Gordo extended the drive, and Johnson added another first down before Chasteen connected with Voce for a 28-yard touchdown to complete the scoring.
Chasteen finished 3-for-4 passing for 64 yards and a touchdown, with Voce catching all three completions. Day rushed for 84 yards, and Johnson added 64 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Cold Springs will travel to Midfield for another Region 5 game Friday, Oct. 9.
