VINEMONT, Ala. – Etowah scored 35 consecutive points and defeated Vinemont 35-12 in Class 3A, Region 6 action Friday night at Eagle Stadium.
The loss snapped Vinemont’s two-game winning streak and dropped the Eagles to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in region play. Etowah improved to 4-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the region at 4-0.
Vinemont received the opening kickoff but was forced to punt. The Eagles’ defense answered by forcing Etowah into a three-and-out.
Etowah broke the scoreless tie late in the first quarter. A drive aided by multiple Vinemont penalties ended with a touchdown, giving the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead with 1:25 remaining in the period.
Etowah added to its lead early in the second quarter, returning an interception for a touchdown to make it 14-0 with 10:56 remaining in the half.
Vinemont responded on the final play of the second quarter when Josh Rhodes connected with Brandon Johnson for a 22-yard touchdown, cutting Etowah’s lead to 14-6 at halftime.
The Eagles recovered an onside kick to begin the third quarter, but Etowah stopped Vinemont on fourth down. The Blue Devils scored after taking possession to extend their advantage to 21-6.
Etowah added another touchdown midway through the third quarter, increasing the margin to 28-6. The Blue Devils scored again in the closing minute of the period to carry a 35-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Vinemont completed the scoring midway through the fourth when Travis Speer reached the end zone on a 2-yard run, trimming the final margin to 35-12.
The teams exchanged punts and turnovers on downs for the remainder of the game.
Vinemont will remain at home to face Hokes Bluff in another Region 6 matchup Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. Etowah will host Hanceville in region play the same night.
