CULLMAN, Ala. – Students at West Elementary School have a brand new playground to enjoy this school year, as the campus officially cut the ribbon on an expansive new playground featuring innovative equipment and a turf play surface that should serve local children for years to come.
Located on the back side of the campus, the new playground features five slides, new swing sets and several climbing and play areas and free play zones for children. Looking ahead, the playground will continue to serve the campus once it makes the transition into the new Cullman Intermediate School next school year.
School and community officials met Tuesday, Sept. 22, on campus to officially open the playground, joined by West Elementary fifth-graders Walker Pannell and Finley Snow, who cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the playground for school use.
The new Cullman Intermediate School will combine grades 3-5 together on one campus, as those grades are currently divided across East and West Elementary Schools. Work on the new two-story wing facing U.S. Highway 278 is well underway, adding approximately 18 new classrooms and administrative space.
Existing classrooms at the campus are also being upgraded and reworked, including a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lab, along with expanded library and cafeteria space. Once complete, the new intermediate campus will feature up to 14 classrooms per grade level, self-contained special education classrooms, special education classrooms, an English language learners and speech room, a music room, art room, gifted room and lab space.
