VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Eagles were back home Friday night to host Southeastern, and they had their hands full with the Mustangs. Southeastern built a 22-14 lead in the first half and the Eagles were unable to chip away in the second half, leading to a 34-14 loss for Vinemont.

Vinemont’s opening drive stalled after a promising start after failing to convert a fourth and short, the Eagles defense forced a three and out to give the ball back to their offense. After the Mustangs defense forced a three and out their offense found the endzone with just under five minutes left in the opening quarter to put the Mustangs up 8-0.

A fumble put an end to another promising drive from the Eagles and the Mustang offense capitalized early in the second quarter with a touchdown to push the lead to 14-0. Vinemont answered quickly on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Josh Rhodes to Caleb Slain to cut the deficit to 14-8. On the ensuing possession Southeastern stretched the lead out to 22-8 midway through the second quarter. With two minutes remaining until halftime Gabriel Herrera raced 17 yards to cut the lead to 22-14.

Early in the third quarter Southeastern stretched the lead to 28-14. Vinemont’s defense came up with a big stop on the fourth and goal then forced a three and out but late in the fourth quarter the Mustangs tacked on a touchdown to secure a 34-14 win over the Eagles.

Vinemont (0-2) will be back home next week to host a region game against Phil Campbell.
