CULLMAN, Ala. – The Critter Crew brought week two of its reading program Tales & Tails to Cullman Christian School on Wednesday, June 17, featuring several amphibious friends.
Critter Crew member Cassidy Wright set the course for the morning with reading time.
“I have not one, but two books to read today!” She announced.
The books were “Frog on a Log” by Kes Gray and Jim Field and “Cookies” from the 1972 book “Frog and Toad Together” by Arnold Lobel.
After the reading session the frogs and toads were to be walked around the room. Wright instructed that this would be a hands-off activity.
“Amphibian skins are very sensitive,” she explained, “The oil from our skin can really hurt them.”
Critter Crew member Brianna Horton showed some of the wildlife ambassadors to those around the room.
While the frogs and toads were shown, Wright explained cutaneous respiration. This is the process in which frogs breathe directly through skin. She said when they are held, the oil from our hands can damage their glands and ability to breathe.
Once the critters were placed back on their safe shelves, it was time for an outdoor activity – a frog and toad race!
In the courtyard, the participants lined up at the starting line and were instructed to hop like a toad until they made it to the halfway point. From there they were instructed to leap like a frog to the finish line.
Afterward, they gathered inside once more to receive their “Tales and Tails Week 2 Take Home Challenge.”
This list consisted of the following tasks:
- Tell a friend one fact you learn about frogs and toads
- Listen for a frog or toad call
- Observe a frog or toad(from a distance)
- Count how many jumps it takes to cross your yard like a frog
- Spot a place where tadpoles might live
As the day neared its end, program participants grabbed a refreshing cup of “pond water.” This consisted of blue Hawaiian Punch, Swedish fish at the very bottom to enjoy after and “lily pad” garnish, which was a lime on the rim. This was prepared by Cullman Christian School’s Science Club.
Wright gave a special thanks to the club members for volunteering.
The next reading program will take place on Wednesday, June 24, from 9-10 a.m. at Cullman Christian School, 1803 Beech Ave. SE, Cullman.
Critter Crew describes itself: “Where curiosity meets critters! We offer STEAM programs featuring native and exotic wildlife — many rescued or surrendered that now serve as ambassadors for education. Partnering with schools, homeschool groups, and community events across North Alabama.”
