CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Elks Lodge invites the public to its annual Flag Day Celebration, to be held on Sunday, June 14, at 4 p.m., a longstanding tradition honoring the American flag and recognizing local veterans for their service, while teaching the public about the flag’s history.
This event is part of a nationwide tradition required by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The Elks is the first and only fraternal group to require a formal Flag Day observance. This tradition began in 1908, when the Grand Lodge asked every local lodge to hold a Flag Day ceremony on June 14.
One of the highlights will be a display of historical American flags. As each flag is shown, organizers will explain its meaning and the history behind it. Local military veterans from different generations will carry the flags into the ceremony. Each flag will be brought in by one of Cullman’s own military heroes.
The ceremony honors the sacrifices and achievements of veterans and helps people learn more about the history of the nation’s flag. The program also teaches about how the American flag has changed over time and the conflicts where it was present.
The event welcomes people of all ages, including children and adults. Organizers hope families will use the ceremony as a chance to learn more about American history and build a sense of patriotism and respect for national symbols. After the ceremony, attendees can enjoy a free meal.
The Cullman Elks Lodge also holds an Americanism Essay Contest for students in fifth through eighth grades. Winners in each age group receive cash prizes, and local teachers are encouraged to include the contest in their lessons.
The annual Flag Day celebration aims to keep educating the community while honoring those who have served and sacrificed for the country.
