HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville Elementary and Hanceville Middle School on Wednesday, April 29, hosted a special event commemorating America’s Semiquincentennial – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The theme was “What does America mean to me?”

The program, held in the high school gymnasium, featured special guest speakers including Rep. Heath Allbright, R-Holly Pond; Rep. Cindy Myrex, R-Cullman; Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Chad Whaley, Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette and Hanceville City Councilwoman Jana Shelton. It also showcased

performances by the middle school’s fifth-grade music class and the Pride of Hanceville Band.

The celebration marked the recognition of both schools as official Semiquincentennial Schools.

Students, faculty, staff and community members gathered for the celebration, which also saw tribute paid to veterans in attendance. Special seating was given to veterans and active-duty service members, and during a performance by Hanceville Middle School fifth-graders, they were prompted to stand for applause.

Speakers encouraged students. At one point, Whaley quoted Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben, saying, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

He urged students to understand that they sculpt their future as well as the future of America.

“On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.” (www.america250.org)
