HAMILTON, Ala. – Good Hope was back on the road for another big region game between a pair of ranked teams at Hamilton Friday night and it was a nailbiter. The Aggies and Raiders went back and forth throughout the first half, but Good Hope was unable to convert enough red zone opportunities to keep pace, and Hamilton was able to hold on to a 28-21 win over the Raiders.
The Aggies struck early, scoring on a 50-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with just two minutes gone in the first quarter. However, Good Hope had an answer. After a big return from Carter Rutherford on the ensuing kickoff, Mason Drake took a handoff 47 yards up the middle and into the end zone for a Raider touchdown, tying things up at 7 midway through the first quarter. After forcing the Aggies to punt, Good Hope took the lead on another explosive play. Quarterback Parker Johnson found Drake on a short route over the middle of the field and Drake did the rest, taking it 76 yards to the house for another Raider touchdown and a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Hamilton responded to the early onslaught, putting together a nice scoring drive to tie the game at 14 with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. After a Good Hope punt, the Aggies found the end zone again, pulling ahead 21-14 with 4:43 on the clock and the Raiders were unable to get any more points on the board before the halftime break.
Good Hope had another scoring opportunity early in the third after a big run by Johnson, but an interception cut the drive short and gave the ball back to Hamilton. The Aggies capitalized, finishing another scoring drive in the end zone to take a 28-14 lead with three minutes remaining in the third. The Raiders kept their hopes alive when Johnson hit Rutherford in the end zone for a touchdown that cut the lead to 7 at the end of the third quarter. Another big run from Parker gave Good Hope another great scoring opportunity but the Raiders were stopped short on fourth down and Hamilton’s offense took over with around seven minutes on the clock. The Aggies iced the game on the ensuing possession, keeping the chains and the clock moving to keep Good Hope’s offense on the sideline and secure a 28-21 win over the Raiders.
Good Hope (6-1) will be back home next week for another region game against Fayette County.
