GORDO, Ala. – Vinemont traveled to Gordo to take on the third-ranked Green Wave in a battle of undefeated teams in the region Friday night and it was a special night for Vinemont. After a hard-fought game, the Eagles scored midway through the fourth quarter to pull ahead for good and seal a massive, 22-19 win.

Vinemont head coach Stephen Robinson was proud of his team for the way they fought to earn a huge win for the program. He’s not sure they believed they would win when they arrived at the stadium tonight, but he mentioned one play in particular where he felt the energy shift on the Eagles’ sideline.

“This was a huge win for Vinemont and it’s the biggest win that Vinemont football has had in a long time,” Robinson said. “Belief. I don’t think we got off the bus believing, but when we were down two scores and Chase Blair chased the ball back down and forced the touchback, the attitude on the sideline was different”.

Vinemont went three and out on their first possession and with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter Gordo found the endzone to pull ahead 7-0. Early in the second quarter Gordo extended their lead to 13-0. Vinemont’s next possession stalled as their failed to convert on fourth down, but Vinemont’s Chase Blair chased down the run and punched the ball out just short of the goal line and the ball bounced out of the back of the endzone for a touchback to give the ball back to the Eagles. Vinemont went on a time-consuming drive that ended when Josh Rhodes found the endzone from 6 yards out to trim the lead to 13-7 with 1:50 remaining until halftime.

Gordo got the ball to start the second half and Vinemont’s Brandon Johnson blocked the punt to set up Vinemont in excellent field position, but a tipped pass led to an interception giving the ball back to the Green Wave. Two plays later Vinemont forced a fumble, but a failed fourth down conversion gave the ball back to the Wave. Vinemont forced a three and out, this time the Eagles offense capitalized when Gabriel Herrera raced 21 yards to put the Eagles up 14-13 late in the third quarter.

Gordo scored to retake a 19-14 lead with 9:22 remaining in the game but Vinemont answered on the ensuing possession and regained the lead at 22-19 on a 24-yard run from Dalton Bryan midway through the fourth quarter. Gordo’s next possession ended when Preston Hanners got a sack on fourth down. Gordo was forced to use its remaining timeouts and from there Eagles ended the game in victory formation.

Vinemont (6-2) has now won six straight and will be back home for a region game against Oakman next week.
