CULLMAN, Ala. – The Sheriff’s Youth Leadership Academy (SYLA), hosted annually by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, was held June 23-27. Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the event continues to expand its reach and impact.

“This year’s academy welcomed more than 40 students from every school across the city and county, including homeschool participants,” Gentry said. “The Academy is offered at no cost to attendees.”

Over a decade ago, Gentry said, he envisioned a program that would inspire and develop the next generation of leaders in Cullman County.

“What began as a small initiative with just 12 participants has since grown into a cornerstone of youth development in the area,” he said. “Participants must be at least 16 years old, or have reliable transportation, due to travel requirements throughout the week. Upon completion, students earn 40 hours of community service credit. More than just a leadership camp, SYLA offers an immersive experience in patriotism, civic responsibility and law enforcement operations.“

Gentry said the week-long program features a wide array of activities, including team-building and leadership exercises, firearms safety and training, K9 demonstrations, physical fitness sessions and more.

“While instruction is primarily led by members of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, the program enjoys broad support from community partners,” Gentry said. “One such partner is the ROPES program (through Juvenile Probation), led by Chris Hopper, which plays a major role in the Academy’s success. Philip Robertson of Woodmen Life continues to provide an annual American flag etiquette course. Judges, juvenile probation officers and representatives from the district attorney’s office also volunteer their time to speak with participants, offering valuable insights into the justice system. Wallace State Community College remains a vital partner, providing facilities for physical training and access to its virtual law enforcement simulator.”

SYLA also includes a recreational component, with a visit to Zip Line Adventures at Smith Lake, a highlight for many attendees.

Preparation for the 2026 Sheriff’s Youth Leadership Academy will begin during the upcoming school year.

Applications will be available from school resource officers, school administrators, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and by contacting Lt. Chad Whaley at cwhaley@cullmansheriff.org.
