BAILEYTON, Ala. Mayor Windell Calloway called the monthly session of the Baileyton Town Council to order on June 2, with Councilman Benny Guthrie opening the meeting with an invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

The council started the meeting by closing out old business. First on the agenda, Town Clerk Summer Bixler discussed her efforts in organizing the financial statements from prior to the beginning of her tenure. Bixler stated that while trying to enter all the scattered information into the online platform QuickBooks, “It was a disaster.” She said it’s an ongoing process, but the Town now only has two months’ worth of  2024 statements left to update before its audit can be completed.

Next up, Calloway acknowledged that town roadways are in need of maintenance, saying, “The way the weather has been with the rain has made things pretty tough. We’ve had to wait on it, and there is still water in some of the ditches. When it clears up, we will start mowing it.” In the meantime, the mayor said, a string trimmer will be used in severe areas until mowing can be completed. He also said the Town will be using cold patches to help repair damaged roadways.

In new business, the council discussed nominees for Baileyton Volunteer and Citizen of the Year.

One nominee for volunteer of the year was brought forth for consideration – Charlie Whitehead. Ginger Tucker wrote a letter to the council nominating Whitehead, stating, “Charlie has donated many hours to our town without needing or wanting any recognition. He has helped with many projects with the roads… and many jobs at the school… He has volunteered his time, truck and equipment to help with Bargain Days. He is a great asset to the community and willing to help at any time.”

Two citizens were presented for nomination. The first nomination was made by Dewayne Sumner, putting forth Martha Guthrie as a candidate. His nomination stated, “Mrs. Guthrie has been a staple in the Baileyton community for many years. She and her deceased husband have always been active parts of the growth and development of Baileyton. Mrs. Guthrie is an active member of her church and works with them to provide meals to those in need…is a valued member of the Parkside School Resource Team…I can’t think of anyone more deserving of being recognized as Baileyton Citizen of the Year in 2025.”

The second nominee for Citizen of the Year was made by Debra Moon on behalf of Jo Withey. The recommendation read, “Jo uses her God-given love and concern for others, talents, skills and experiences every day to bring honor and glory to God in all that she does. She never brings attention to herself for recognition of things she is a part of. She is an active mentor every week at Parkside School, an active partner and participant in the Parkside Outreach Program, she coordinates and shops for the Kids for Kids organization… her skills have been a great blessing not only to our church but to the entire Baileyton community.”

All nominees were put forth for a vote, and the council unanimously voted Charlie Whitehead as Volunteer of the Year and Martha Guthrie as Citizen of the Year. Whitehead and Guthrie will be recognized at the next regularly scheduled council meeting.
