Commission approves airport bids, voting precinct change

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission at its May 20 meeting addressed infrastructure improvements, voting precinct change and a retirement recognition.

Commissioners approved a resolution honoring Alvie Plunkett for 26 years of service with the Cullman County Road Department. Several officials praised Plunkett for his dedication, integrity and commitment to public service. 

The commission also awarded multiple construction contracts to Wiregrass Construction for work at Cullman Regional Airport, including apron reconstruction. Commissioners also approved a new airport hangar bid from Newell, Park & Eleazer Construction for over $2.7 million. The Cullman City Council approved its portion of the project on May 12.

The commission approved the temporary relocation of the Hanceville City Hall voting precinct for the House District 11 general election on Aug. 26, moving polling to the Hanceville Senior Center at 209 Michelle Street.

The commission also approved several subdivision-related requests, including a variance and plat for the 17-lot Bales Cove Subdivision and a permit extension for Crossroads Estates.

Use of the courthouse parking lot was granted for upcoming events hosted by David Chavez and the Cullman Civitan Club.

The commission also approved a $24,000 cleaning contract, a $12,328 network switch purchase and finalized FY2024 tax settlements.

Additional actions included approving road access plans for Rock the South, moving the Commission on Aging’s account to Premier Bank and reappointing Mitch Duke to the Walter Authority Board.

The next work session will be held on Tuesday, June 17, at 4 p.m., with a meeting to follow at 6. Both will be in the commission meeting room at the Cullman County Courthouse.
