Norma was born on February 3, 1932, in New York, New York to the late Austin Richard & Elisabeth Basse York. She died peacefully in her sleep on May 3, 2025, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy rooted in faith, compassion, and quiet joy.
Norma lived her life grounded in her deep faith in Christ. She shared that faith not with loud proclamations, but with consistent acts of kindness, generosity, and heartfelt conversations that helped others find their own path to God. Her life was a gentle witness to the grace she believed in so deeply. Professionally, Norma found great purpose in her work as an executive administrative assistant. Over the years and across many roles, she was known for her calm demeanor, sharp attention to detail, and the warmth she brought to every office she graced. Her coworkers respected her not only for her competence but for the kindness that came naturally to her. Family was central to Norma’s heart. She took great pride in her deep family roots, cherishing the traditions, stories, and connections that shaped her identity. Her legacy of love and loyalty lives on in all who were fortunate enough to call her family.
Norma was also an avid reader, and her love for books was legendary. Her collection was vast—enough to fill a small library—and her favorite genre was mystery, with the Nancy Drew series holding a special place in her heart. She carved out time for reading whenever she could, often retreating to her car during lunch breaks to dive into a story, savoring those moments of peace and imagination. Even during her years living in the Bronx, Norma’s love of reading never paused. She became so attuned to the rhythm of the subway rides that she didn’t need to look up to know when her stop arrived—she could tell simply by how far along she was in her book. It was a small, perfect example of how books weren’t just a pastime, but part of her way of life.
She will be remembered for her faith-filled heart, her intellectual curiosity, and the quiet strength with which she moved through the world. She leaves behind a legacy of grace, wisdom, and love that will continue to guide and inspire those who knew her.
