
FLORENCE, Ala. – Both the Cold Springs Eagles and Hanceville Bulldogs finished runner up at their respective area tournaments last week and they were both back in action at regional tournaments on Monday. Cold Springs fell to Lindsay Lane (13-3) and Tuscaloosa Academy (16-14) at the 2A North Regional in Florence, bringing the Eagles’ season to an end. At the 3A East Regional in Albertville, Hanceville dropped its first game of the day to Ohatchee 11-2 and lost a nailbiter in an elimination game with Randolph County 12-11.
Tuscaloosa Academy 16 – Cold Springs 14 (2A North Regional)
After falling to Lindsay Lane in their first game Monday morning, Cold Springs was back on the field a few hours later for an elimination game against Tuscaloosa Academy. Kaydance Williams scored on a passed ball and Brooklyn Ingram scored on an error to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the top of the first. Three straight walks loaded the bases, but a double play ended the inning before Cold Springs could add to its lead. Tuscaloosa County answered in the bottom half of the inning, plating five runs to take a 5-2 lead into the second.
The Eagles cut into the lead in the top of the second. Aleah Addison doubled into center field to put a runner in scoring position and three pitches later, Williams drove her in with a single to left field and made it a 5-3 game. The Knights extended their lead in the bottom of the second, putting five more runs on the board to pull ahead 10-3.
A 2-run double off the bat of Adriana Young trimmed the lead to 10-5 in the top of the third and later in the inning, Young came home to score on a fielder’s choice to make it 10-6 going into the fourth. Williams and Ingram both scored on an error to make it a 2-run game in the top of the fourth, but Tuscaloosa Academy tacked on five more runs in the bottom half of the inning to stay in front 15-8. Brooke Rowan scored on a steal to make it a 15-9 game in the top of the sixth, but the Knights pushed another run across in the bottom of the sixth to stay in front 16-9.
Cold Springs didn’t go down without a fight. Williams lined an RBI single to right field to bring the lead down to 16-10 in the top of the seventh. Addison scored on a passed ball and Williams scored on an error to make it 16-12. Another error allowed Ingram and Sadie Smith to score later in the inning, but the Eagles couldn’t chip away any more than that and their season came to an end with a 16-14 loss.
Williams (two hits) and Young (one hit) each finished with two RBIs in the loss.
Ohatchee 11 – Hanceville 2 (3A East Regional)
Kynzlee Farr led off the game for Hanceville with a triple on the first pitch, then Lakin McBee drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Later that inning, Farr scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Three pitches later, McBee scored on a ground ball by Bella Spinks to make it 2-0. Ohatchee, though, hit an RBI double in their half to cut it to 2-1 and tied it up at two in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. The Lady Indians broke the game wide open in the fourth, as they scored seven runs to take a 9-2 lead. Ohatchee added two more runs in the fifth to make it 11-2. Hanceville went down in order to end the game, as they ended up dropping their game to the Lady Indians 11-2.
Spinks finished with a hit and an RBI for the Lady Bulldogs. Karrigan Pipkin added a pair of hits, while Farr and Josi Jones each collected a hit of their own in the loss.
Randolph County 12 – Hanceville 11 (3A East Regional)
A pair of RBI groundouts gave Randolph County an early 2-0 lead in their opening at-bats. Hanceville responded in a big way in their half. Farr and McBee each got hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then Jones hit an RBI single to left field to cut it to 2-1. Another hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out, and McBee and Jones each scored on an error to give the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Laila Lewis added an RBI single to make it 4-2, then Pipkin scored on an error to stretch their lead to 5-2. Piper Butts drove in a run on a ground ball to make it 6-2.
The Lady Tigers cut it to 6-5 in the top of the second on a ground ball and a two-run triple. Spinks led off the bottom of the second with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Butts to give Hanceville a 7-5 lead. The Lady Bulldogs added to their lead in their next at-bats. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases to lead off the inning, and Spinks knocked in a pair of runs on a single to right field to put Hanceville ahead 9-5. Two pitches later, Pipkin hit an RBI single up the middle to increase their lead to 10-5.
A three-run inside the park home run by Randolph County in the top of the fourth made it a 10-8 game. Hanceville got one of the runs back in their half. Pitts hit a single to left field on the first pitch with one out, then Farr hit the first pitch she saw into left field for a double to put runners on second and third. McBee’s bunt single drove in Pitts, as that gave the Lady Bulldogs an 11-8 lead. The Lady Tigers tied the game up at 11 in the top of the sixth on a pair of errors, and they took the lead in the seventh on a two-out RBI single. Hanceville went down in order to end not only the game, but their season as well, as Randolph County ended up defeating the Lady Bulldogs 12-11.
Pipkin led the way for Hanceville with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Spinks (three hits) and Butts (one hit) each drove in a pair of runs in the game, while McBee, Jones and Lewis all collected a hit and an RBI as well.
