CULLMAN, Ala. – Sherry and Tommy Boatright have brought the vibrant tradition of Carolina Shag dancing to the Cullman community. After hosting group lessons for members of St. John’s Church, the couple is now expanding their efforts, inviting the entire community to join in and experience the joy of this iconic dance.
The Carolina Shag came to life in the 1940s on the beaches of the Carolinas. Performed with a partner, its basic step is an upbeat, quick and smooth pattern danced in a slot. The Shag evolved from the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug, incorporating elements of swing dance with a more relaxed feel. The dance is typically performed to beach music, a genre that blends R&B, soul and early rock ‘n’ roll.
Cullman’s Carolina Beach Shaggers will host their first gathering on Saturday, April 26. Admission is $10, and snacks, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Newcomers are encouraged to attend as a lesson will be held at 6 p.m., with music and dancing from 7-10.
“We are so excited to share our love of Shag. Of course, we want Shaggers to come, but also those who may not know what Shag is but would love to find out about it,” said Sherry Boatright.
The event will be held at VFW Post 2214, located at 112 Veterans Drive in Cullman. For more information, call 256-352-5080 or email duckcreek@bellsouth.net.
