Military dad surprises family at Harmony School event

LOGAN, Ala. – Harmony School was the scene of heartwarming homecoming on Wednesday, March 5. The school organized a special surprise and students, faculty, staff, county officials and community members gathered to welcome Commander Tyler Herring of the Alabama National Guard home, after 10 months, from his second deployment in Africa. Herring surprised his children, Emmie and Carter, who attend Harmony School.

Herring’s wife, Laura, received news that her husband would be returning home, and she wanted to surprise their children with a special event. Harmony School was more than happy to assist. Everyone dressed in red, white and blue and gathered in the gymnasium for what they thought was a “patriotic assembly.” After a prayer led by a pastor from Jones Chapel First Baptist Church, a teacher sang the national anthem.

The Herring family was invited to lead the Pledge of Allegiance on stage. Commander Herring entered the stage and greeted his children with a tearful hug as the family was honored for his military service. The children received bravery medals to commend their strength during their father’s deployment. Carter Herring was recognized for stepping up as the “man of the house” while his father was away, and Emmie Herring was celebrated for her courage. Commander Herring received a plaque recognizing his bravery and service.

In honor of the Herring family, Harmony students presented and performed. Eighth-grader Murphy Perdue recited Diana Hahlbohm’s poem “I Am a Soldier,” while the fourth grade put on a lively dance to “Proud to be an American.”
