BAILEYTON, Ala. – Mayor Windell Calloway commenced the monthly session of the Baileyton Town Council on March 3, 2025. The meeting opened with an invocation led by Councilman Greg Griffin.

Business began by reading and approving an ordinance for an electronic counting device at Baileyton Town Hall during election season.

Furthermore, another ordinance was proposed for immediate consideration due to a motion made by Griffin. This ordinance dictates that the Baileyton Municipal Election will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 26, for the purpose of electing a mayor and council members for Places 1,2,3,4 and 5. This ordinance also establishes the polling place as Baileyton Community Center, with an absentee ballot box located at Baileyton Town Hall.

Both ordinances passed unanimously. Full ordinances are available for public viewing at www.facebook.com/thetownofbaileyton.

In new business, Councilman Dewayne Sumner brought forth the topic of the annual Volunteer and Citizen of the Year Awards. Sumner stated, “We will post on Facebook to open up nominations for Volunteer of the Year and Citizen of the Year. Anyone can make those nominations anytime.” Volunteer of the Year does not have to be a resident of the town; however, Citizen of the Year must be a Baileyton resident. Nominations are due by the end of May, and official awards will be presented at the regularly scheduled June 2025 Baileyton Town Council session.

The Baileyton Senior Center currently operates one day a week. Councilwoman Donna Kent proposed adding an extra day for activities. Kent made a motion to open the senior center building on Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-noon. Sumner seconded the motion and the proposal passed unanimously.

Kent also made note of security issues at the senior center. The council discussed damaged doorknobs and faulty window locks. The council made a motion to update these areas of concern and Sumner offered to spearhead research to determine a more extensive security system equipped with cameras and alarms.

The next town council meeting date will be Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall, located at 95 Fire Station Road.
