CULLMAN, Ala. – Small and beginning farmers will have the opportunity to explore essential farm equipment at the upcoming Small Farm Equipment Demo – Military Veteran & Beginning Farmer Workshop on Feb. 20, from 1-4 p.m. This free event, co-hosted by the Cullman County Extension Office and the North Alabama Agriplex, will be held at Wallace State Community College’s Horticulture Complex.

Designed specifically for small-scale farmers and military veterans, this workshop will introduce participants to key pieces of farm equipment that will be available for rent later this year through the Alabama Extension Operation Grow Hardware & Equipment Loan Program (HELP). The equipment demonstrated will include a plastic mulch layer and lifter, seed and plug planters, a tiller and a flail mower, all tools used primarily for horticultural crops such as annual fruits and vegetables.

“This workshop is a great opportunity for farmers looking to expand their operations without immediately investing in expensive equipment,” said Dr. Kira Sims, Cullman County Extension coordinator. “Through the Operation Grow HELP program, small and beginning farmers will have the chance to rent farm equipment at a lower cost and determine if it’s a worthwhile investment for their farm.”

The Demo Day will provide participants with a hands-on introduction to these tools, covering equipment safety, functionality and best practices for use. Attending the event will also serve as the required training for farmers who wish to rent equipment once the program becomes available later this year.

While the equipment rental program is still in development, Alabama Extension encourages farmers interested in renting or purchasing any of the demonstrated equipment to attend. “This is not an event for homeowners; it’s specifically for small and beginning farmers,” Sims emphasized.

The workshop will be led by Alabama Extension Agents with direct experience operating farm equipment, giving participants a chance to gain practical insights and ask questions in a collaborative, hands-on environment.

Though the event is free, space is limited and online registration is required. Farmers are encouraged to register early by signing up at www.aces.edu/go/demoday.
