BREMEN, Ala. – After shutting out Cleveland on the road last week, the Cold Springs Eagles returned home and looked to continue their winning ways against Winston County on Friday night. It was a close game at the half, but it was all Winston County in the second half, as they ended up pulling away to defeat the Eagles 27-6.

Cold Springs got the ball to start out the game, and on the third play, Cason Alexander broke free for a 30-yard gain, as that put the ball at the 36. Tycen Kilgo and Mason Gable picked up some big first downs during the drive, and Kilgo punched it in from a yard out to give Cold Springs a 6-0 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagle defense quickly forced a turnover on its opening drive, as Breydon Hallmon recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble at the 34. The Eagles continued to pound the ball right at Winston County’s defense, as a pair of big runs by Gable, and a big run on third down by Alexander, kept the drive alive for Cold Springs. Unfortunately, though, they ended up turning the ball over on downs.

The Yellow Jackets didn’t waste any time getting in the end zone on their next series, as a 36-yard touchdown run gave them a 7-6 lead with 4:34 remaining in the first half. The Eagles looked to get the lead right before the half, and they stuck to their running game on its next series. Kilgo picked up the first down on four separate occasions during the drive, including a crucial one on fourth down, to keep the series alive for Cold Springs. Things would stall after that, and a turnover-on-downs gave the ball back to Winston County. The Eagle defense kept the score at 7-6 going into the break.

The Yellow Jackets struck quickly to start out the second half, as a 51-yard touchdown run gave them a 14-6 lead only 14 seconds into the third quarter. Cold Springs was forced to punt on its first series of the third quarter. A 33-yard pass play on third down gave Winston County new life, and the ground game took over after that, as they ended the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to push their lead to 21-6. Cold Springs got a first down on a Clayton Terry run, and later that drive, a big 15-yard pass on fourth down from Ethan Day to Hallmon kept the drive alive for the Eagles. The drive quickly slowed down after that, as a sack on fourth down gave the ball back to Winston County.

Alexander picked off a Yellow Jacket pass and returned it to the 33, but another turnover-on-downs gave the ball right back to Winston County. A 21-yard halfback pass went for a score, and the Yellow Jackets would go on to defeat Cold Springs (3-2), 27-6.

Kilgo finished with 52 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown for the Eagles. Alexander added 69 rushing yards on 15 carries and collected an interception as well. Hallmon recovered a fumble for Cold Springs in the loss.

The Eagles will remain home to host Lynn next week.
