Mayor Woody Jacobs talks local improvement projects, Christmas season

CULLMAN, Ala. – Downtown construction projects have been topics of discussion at recent Cullman City Council meetings, and Mayor Woody Jacobs was happy to talk about achievements that will facilitate this year’s expanded holiday celebrations.

“Nathan (Anderson) and (Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism) are having a Christkindlmarkt, barely, because we’ve been working feverishly to finish up Depot Park, and I think Friday we poured the last little bit of concrete,” said Jacobs.

The mayor said that finishing touches still have to be done, but Depot Park will be open in time for the return of Cullman’s traditional Christmas season events including the second annual Christkindlmarkt (an open air Christmas market that will feature a collection of vendors in booths around the park), Weihnachtspyramide (a giant version of the popular moving multitiered German Christmas decoration), tree lighting spectacular and a new carousel this year.

Said Jacobs, “The market is going to be unbelievable. We’ve been to several throughout the United States and Germany, and ours will rival anything. I’ve seen several; I’m telling you: we’re setting the standard. It’s going to be really nice.”

Paving projects

Jacobs addressed the paving project on County Road 222 from Interstate 65 to Topre America, noting that work is nearly complete, with only seal coating and striping still to do.

The mayor also said that the company doing that work would do a little more.

Jacobs said, “Before they leave town, they promised that we’re going to get Arnold Street from the Folsom Center to West Main, so that’s going to help with what we’ve got going on here.”

When can we drive by city hall again?

Jacobs told the Tribune that construction on Second Avenue Northeast in front of city hall is supposed to be done in February, but earlier completion is possible. Jacobs said the “contractual date is Feb. 9, but (we’re) hoping to get a Christmas present.”

The Cullman City Council meets at Cullman City Hall at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. The public is invited to attend.
