CULLMAN, Ala. – A familiar face with the Cullman Police Department decided to replace his badge with a retirement pledge this week. Captain Jeff Warnke has served as a law enforcement officer for more than 37 years.

“Counting my reserve time and full time with Cullman Police Department, Decatur Police Department and Montgomery Airport Police Department, I have a total of 37 years, 11 months, one week and one day in service,” Warnke said.

“One thing I will truly miss is my law enforcement brothers,” he said. “I was taught to trust my partner with my life, and I have served alongside some true leaders – honorable and capable men.”

When asked about career moments of true impact, Warnke recalled one that stands out.

“There are so many memories throughout the years it’s hard to pick from, but probably the most memorable was Wednesday, April 27, 2011, when the EF-4 tornado roared through downtown Cullman,” Warnke said. “I was on duty as sergeant alongside Lt. JP White, and we were monitoring the weather on television due to the earlier tornado that had struck the golf course and the Hanceville area. When WBRC Fox 6 Chief Meteorologist JP Dice mentioned a very severe storm over Smith Lake we both silently got up and headed west to monitor the weather. It was a helpless feeling watching that tornado plow through the city, knowing there was nothing we could do to stop its advance. After it passed we were nonstop for two weeks straight without an off day. I went from managing four-five officers on my day shift to managing 150-200 officers from departments all over the state and out of state who came to help us. It was definitely a challenge.”

Warnke said many colleagues influenced him over the years, through leadership, encouragement, knowledge and support, but two in particular.

“Probably two of the most influential people in my law enforcement career have been (Former) Assistant Police Chief Craig Montgomery and (Former) Chief Kenny Culpepper,” Warnke said. “They taught me how to be a good supervisor and a real leader of men. Both have a servant’s heart and taught me to have the same.”

When asked what his plans are for his retirement, Warnke said he will be enjoying something that has acted as a stress reliever for many years.

“As for hobbies, golf is my favorite, although I will be the first to tell you I am not very good at it,” Warnke smiled. “Over the years it’s been a good release, allowing me to think and blow off steam.”
