CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Performing Arts, including the Cullman High School Theatre Department and Choir, will debut its production of “Newsies” on Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.

Said CHS Theatre Director Wayne Cook, “We are always looking for productions that have broad appeal and match up with our talent. We just happen to be loaded with very good male talent right now and so doing ‘Newsies’ makes sense.”

According to Cook, the production’s storyline has a “David and Goliath” size matchup, and the little guy is victorious. “It is highly energetic and matches our program well,” he said.

“Newsies” marks the 25th time Cook and CHS Choral Director Sarah Jane Skinner have teamed up to stage a production. Skinner focuses on music and choreography while Cook focuses on the production, promotion, sets, tech and acting.

The show was cast in December and rehearsals began in January. According to Cook, it’s always a long process and the group aims to produce high-quality theater, which demands a lot of time and energy on the part of the cast and crew. He said he wants people to come out and see the shows not only because they are supporting the departments and students, but also because they enjoy them.

Cook said he is very excited about the set design for “Newsies.” “I usually come up with the design of the show and enlist people to assist us as we make a set come to life. This set is massive and so exciting. One must come to see the show to discover what I mean.”

When asked what he is looking forward to the most this time around, he said, “I always look forward to showcasing these amazing students we have in this town. There is no shortage of talent, and it shines through this production. We put singers, actors, dancers, tumblers, builders and artists out in front of this community to demonstrate what students can do when challenged.”

See “Newsies” Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m.; Friday, April 21, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, April 22,at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased online at https://cullmanhs.booktix.com.
