CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Therapeutic Recreation Hoop Stars basketball team held their first game of the season at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center Saturday morning. The adult games begin at 9:00 a.m. and the youth games start at 11:00 a.m. The ages of the members range from four to about 65. This year’s spots on the team were quickly filled in November with many new participants. The Hoop Stars have eight adult teams and four youth teams.

The Angling for Autism group provided funding to the Therapeutic Recreation program for their Hoop Stars team and covered the cost of over 80 members that signed up, and is the most that has ever been registered to participate.

Director Kelly Pulliam said, “We have a couple coaches who are actual basketball coaches from some different high schools and then we just have other volunteers. Some are parents, but most are just people who are willing to volunteer.”

Pulliam also said that the games went better than expected with a bigger crowd than anticipated. “I definitely could not have done this without the coaches because it’s very hands on with the basketball. Definitely having experienced coaches and coaches willing to learn and help, it makes all the difference.”

All games in February will be held at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Practices are held every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Aquatic Center gym. Everyone is encouraged to attend and cheer on the team. Coaches will be available to lead each practice.
