Flourishing the Night event raises funds for Robert Squires Independent Living Skills Apartment

CULLMAN, Ala. – Nonprofit Flourish of Cullman Inc. held their Flourishing the Night Together fundraising event Saturday evening, Sat. 5 at the Terri Pines Country Club. The event was a fundraiser for the Robert Squires Independent Living Skills Apartment which will be right next to the Flourish offices in Welti. Director Melissa Dew stated, “Individuals that have disabilities can come and spend the night or spend a few hours there and see what they need to work on to be independent and live independently.”

Flourish of Cullman provides empowerment to people with disabilities and offers life coaching, job placement assistance, structured play and social activities for its clients. The new apartment building is named in honor of former Flourish client Robert Squires who passed in January of 2021. Melissa says, “Robert was somebody that came into our program that touched our hearts. He lived independently. He was always willing to help other people, and that’s why when he passed, we named the Independent Living Skills apartment after him.”

The 80s themed event offered bingo prizes of a $50 AMC gift card, a $100 Ledgers gift card, a $100 gift card to Drehers, a 40” Vizio TV and some cash prizes.

Some of the items featured at the silent auction were an Alabama football signed by Nick Saban, a Smith Farms basket donated by realtor Robbie Downs, A Child Protection Will package from attorney Blake West, A Warehouse District basket with items from several businesses, a one-hour golf lesson with Beau Bryan, Thomas Moore Chardonnay casks and Nicole Miller glasses donated by Melissa Dew.

Tickets for the event were $75 individually and $500 per table. A few of the businesses that were present for the event were R.E. Garrison, Cullman Co-op, Ray’s Tire, Kilgo Law Firm, Karma’s and Cullman Savings Bank, with a total of about 200 people in attendance. All proceeds from the event will go toward the completion of the Robert Squires Independent Living Skills Apartment.
